Taylor Hojnacki of Central Bucks South became the new AAA discus champion with a winning throw of 133-1, her first career state gold medal.

In AA boys, Clay Allen of West Middlesex won his first of 4 gold medals on the weekend, surpassing defending champion Danny Jackson of Trinity (3) in the final round of the long jump to win with a mark of 23 feet even. Jackson finished 2nd with his prelim mark of 22-8.50. Evan Arnott of Schuylkill Valley stole the show in the AA discus, winning with a US#11 mark of 195-11, over 15 feet better than the field! Zach Pressel of Northern Bedford defeated Chris Stone of Springfield Montco on misses in the high jump with both athletes clearing 6-8.

In AAA boys, Vince Esposito of North Penn did not miss a height on the way to winning the pole vault with a mark of 15 feet even. Only Derek DiAngelis of Northern Lebanon was able to clear 15 feet with him, but he had to do it on his final attempt. Nolan Hay of Parkland got a huge personal best in the long jump to come away with the championship with a mark of 24-2, six inches better than his state leading mark. Cole Proffitt of Manheim Central cruised to the javelin championship and broke the 200 foot mark in the process. His winning throw of 201 feet was over 11 feet better than the field. Luke Persichetti of Lasalle won his first state gold medal in the shot put with a winning mark of 57-0.50 to win by almost a foot. Donovan Clay of Stroudsburg was one of 6 high jumpers to clear 6-6, but they all missed 6-8 and Clay had the best series of jumps to take the gold medal.

Saturday Track

AA girls started off with Adair Gennocro of St Mary's repeating as champion in the 3200 meter run, passing Elizabeth Chikotas of Saucon Valley in the final 300 meters to win in 10:37.90. A young Villa Maria Academy sqaud broke away from the pack in the middle of the 2nd leg and managed to hold on to win the 4x800 meter relay in 9:29.73 over Holy Redeemer and defending champions St Basil's Academy. Amy Hicks of Swenson defeated defending champion Emily Lelis of Springdale in the 100 meter hurdles to win the gold medal 14.07 to 14.18. Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic cruised to the gold medal in the 1600 meter run, winning with a solo effort of 5:01.14. The 800 meter run was a lot more interesting, as Shannon Quinn of Trinity (3) went to the front of the pack and attempted to win it wire to wire, only for Weisner to pass her in the final 20 meters to make it two golds on the day in 2:13.27. Tichina Rhodes of Swenson won the 400 meter dash in 58.41 in front of teammate Imani Harris-Quillen. Swenson also successfully defended both the 4x100 (49.04) and 4x400 meter relay championships (3:58.38) on their way to reclaiming the team title with 77 points!

For AAA girls, Courtney Smith of Unionville avenged her indoor state meet defeat to Tessa Barrett of Abington Heights and won her first outdoor gold medal with a time of 10:24.06! Barrett ran 10:25.16. Palmyra was neck and neck with Pennsbury on the final straightaway of the 4x800 meter relay when Pennsbury's Sara Sargent went down right before the finish line. Palmyra was credited with the championship in 9:13.17 and Great Valley was 2nd in 9:17.05. Jody Ann Evans of Quakertown swept the 100 (11.79) and 200 meter dashes (25.03) to finish 2013 with an unbeaten record against PA sprinters. Brianna Schwartz of Shaler Area went straight to the front from the gun and had to survive a scare from runner up Greta Lindsley to hold on to that lead and win the gold medal in 4:50.05. Caela Williams of Penn Wood got the best of Jamila Branch of Central Bucks West on two occassions. Williams won the open 400 (55.81 to 56.40) and Williams beat out Branch on the anchor leg to win the 4x400 meter relay for Penn Wood over CB West 3:50.20 to 3:50.56. Mary Witmer of Ephrata cemented her place as the top 300 meter hurdler in the state with her gold medal winning time of 42.90, while Kayla Coley of Cheltenham broke ahead out of the blocks and held on to win the 100 meter hurdles in 14.33. Emma Keenan of Gwynedd Mercy Academy won her 3rd straight 800 meter championship with a time of 2:11.37. Hempfield (7) won the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 47.81 to hold off Upper Darby's 47.92. Hempfield (7) came away with the team championship with a score of 53.5 points to double up the competition.

In AA boys, Clay Allen of West Middlesex won 3 of his 4 gold medals in track events. He won the 100 meter dash in 10.72, the 200 meter dash in 22.29 and was on the 4x100 meter relay that won in 43.41 over defending champions Trinity (3). His team went on to score 60 points and defeat Trinity (3) for the team championship. Elsewhere, Rico Galassi of Holy Cross passed defending 3200 meter champion Brendan Shearn of North Schuylkill on the final lap to win the title in 9:12.48 to Shearn's 9:13.33. Annville-Cleona took home two relay gold medals, cruising to the championship in the 4x800 meter relay (8:03.25) and avenging their district 3 loss to Trinity (3) in the 4x400 meter relay (3:27.16). Todd Townsend of Neumann Goretti successfully defended his 110 meter hurdles championship, winning the title in 14.06, while Riverview's Tyler Murphy ran 38.66 to win the 300 meter hurdles. Ryan Smathers of North East was also a repeat champion, retaining the 1600 meter championship in 4:22.69. Curt Jewett of Northeast Bradford came away with the 800 meter gold medal with a time of 1:58.25 to hold off Smathers, while David Bricker of Trinity (3) ran 49.77 to win the 400 meter dash.

In AAA boys, Bensalem scrapped for points on the track and came away with the team championship by a slim margin of two points over Gateway 48-46. Bensalem started with a win in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 7:47.82 to hold off defending champions Cumberland Valley and capped it off with a win in the 4x400 meter relay in 3:19.73 to clinch the team title! Wellington Zaza of Garnet Valley swept both hurdles, running 13.66 to win the 110 meter hurdles, good for US#4 and running 37.24 to win the 300 meter hurdles. In the sprints, Gateway won the 4x100 meter relay with a state leading time of 41.65, which included 100 meter champion Julius Rivera, who held off Jonathan Dorogy of Seneca Valley 10.74 to 10.83. Malik Jones of Ridley won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.49 while Jimmy Brooks of Wilson (3) won the gold medal in the 400 meter dash in 47.81. In the 800 meter run, Zach Brehm of Carlisle escaped the traffic on the final turn from a fall to come away with the championship in 1:54.40. Ethan Martin of Fox Chapel ran a 60 second last 400 meter dash to come away as the new 3200 meter champion with a time of 9:10.74 and hold off Ross Wilson of Council Rock North.

Day 1 Summary

Friday Field

The wind combined with the temperature made the state championships feel like a late March outdoor invitational. Nonetheless, the show went on and to the credit of the athletes, they competed through the tough conditions and came away with championships and great performances!

Rebekah Petty of Greenville entered the weekend as the top vaulter in the state and finished the AA girls pole vault as the state champion with a clearance of 11-9. Bre Manzolillo of Schuylkill Valley tied her personal best of 11-6 to finish 2nd. Lanae Newsome of Brookville was the only AA long jumper to break the 18 foot mark and came away with the title with a mark of 18-1.75 ahead of Essence Barron of New Brighton (17-10.25) and Kaylee Caruso of Montoursville (17-5.50). Courtney King of Lakeview won the AA girls high jump with a clearance of 5-6 to defeat Olivia Jendrezjewski of Hanover on misses. The AA girls discus provided the meet's first big upset of the weekend as Samantha Black of Seneca Valley earned a 9 inch victory over PA#1 and 152 foot thrower Carter Green of North Schuylkill. Black won with a mark of 133-9.

In the AAA girls field events, Cyre Virgo of Fleetwood Area set the high jump meet record with a state title winning mark of 5-11.25, breaking the record of 5-11 set in 2002 by Sheena Gordon of McDowell! Two time defending champion Marshay Ryan of Chambersburg had her hands full with Maddie Holmberg of Hempfield. Ryan jumped 19-10 on her 2nd attempt. Holmberg jumped the same height on her 3rd attempt to tie the competition. In the end, Ryan made it a 3 peat in the long jump due to her 2nd best jump (19-5) being a half an inch better than Holmberg's. AAA PA#1 Cait Mautz of Central Bucks West scored 10 big points for her team as she secured her mark as the best javelin thrower in the division with a state title winning mark of 141-2. Shelby Freedman of Danville Area finished 2nd with a mark of 137-7. Courtney McCartney of Selinsgrove won the AAA shot put title with a series of three throws over 45 feet and no throw under 42 feet! Her title winning mark was 45-5.50!

For boys AA, Kyle McKeen of Northwestern won the triple jump state championship by over two feet with a winning mark of 46-9.25. Dan Reichenbach of Salisbury finished 2nd with a mark of 44-7.25. Matt Krezmer of Montoursville defeated runner up Mitch Obenrader of North Clarion to win the javelin by almost 3 feet with a mark of 182-5. Luke Patten of West Middlesex defeated up and coming sophomore Chris Stone of Springfield Monto on misses to win the pole vault. Both athletes cleared 14-6. The boys shot put lived up to the hype as PA#1 Jon Yohman of Wilmington went toe to toe with the Schuylkill Valley duo of indoor champion Jason Coon and Evan Arnott. In the end, the two could not take down the one as Yohman came away with the gold medal with a mark of 61-8.50. Coon threw 59-10 while Arnott threw 59-5.

For AAA boys, Bryan Pearson of Bangor cemented his spot as the best discus thrower in the state with a gold medal winning performance of 174-9! Tanner Unger of Hempfield (3) was 2nd with a mark of 168-2. Garnet Valley's Wellington Zaza repeated as state champion in the triple jump with a mark of 49-10.25. Zaza had three jumps over 50 feet but fouled by the narrowest of margins.

Friday Track

The track events took some time to warm up through the wind, cold and early sprinkles that greeted the runners on the first day of the meet. St Basil's (AA) and Pennsbury (AAA) had the fastest qualifying heats in the 4x800 meter relay, but the times were not as quick compared to year's past. Same could be said on the boys side, as neither division had a sub 8 minute team in the preliminary round. South Williamsport (AA) and Bensalem (AAA) enter tomorrow's finals with the fastest qualifying times. The wind really impacted the 4x100 meter relays, as 14 teams were disqualified while five more teams did not get the baton around the track. Swenson (AA) and Hempfield (7) (AAA) led the way on the girls side while Hickory (AA) and PA#1 Gateway (AAA) led the way for the boys. In the 4x400 meter relays, district 1 dominated AAA, as six of the eight finalists in both the boys and girls races came from district 1! Defending champions Swenson girls led all qualifiers in girls AA while Wyomissing led all AA boys qualifiers.

In the hurdles, the wind was switching between a straight tail wind and a cross wind, helping some runners and hurting others. Wellington Zaza of Garnet Valley tied the meet record in the 110 meter hurdles (13.79) but there was too much wind for the record to count (2.4 m/s). Defending AA high hurdles champion Todd Townsend of Neumann Goretti cruised to a 14.40 prelim time to lead all qualifiers. For the girls, defending AA champion Emily Lelis of Springdale trails the Swenson duo of Amy Hick and Markeeta Thomas after the prelims. Ciara Leonard of Cheltenham leads the pack of AAA hurdlers after round 1 (14.51). In the intermediate hurdles, Zaza will match up with Greg Miaczynski of Central Tech in the AAA final, with the two of them running the fastest times in round 1. Tyler Murphy of Riverview leads the AA boys qualifiers (39.41). Defending

AA champion Lelis leads the AA qualifiers while PA#1 Mary Witmer of Ephrata leads the AAA advancers with a time of 43.24. In the sprints, Jody Ann Evans of Quakertown cracked the 12 second mark with a time of 11.97 to lead the AAA qualifiers while Amy Hicks of Swenson ran 12.13 to lead the AA prelims. Jonathan Dorogy of Seneca Valley ran 10.68 to lead the AAA qualifiers while DeShawn Coleman of Hickory ran 10.87 to lead the AA advancers. In the 200 meters, AA long jump champion Lanae Newsome ran 25.15 to lead the AA prelims while Evans led the AAA qualifiers with a time of 25.27. Malik Jones of Ridley ran 22.18 to lead the AAA boys and Clay Allen of West Middlesex ran 22.73 to lead the AA division. In the 400 meter dash, Hanna Green of Greater Latrobe ran 56.37 to lead AAA girls qualifiers and Quadisha Newkirk of Paul Robeson ran 58.76 to lead the top eight in AA. Malik Jones ran 50 seconds flat to lead the AAA qualifiers and Trinity's (3) David Brickler ran 50.12 to lead the AA qualifiers.
