RACE PREVIEW

The New Balance Track and Field Center at the New York Armory will be hosting the Millrose Games Trials on Wednesday. The winners of this competition guarantee automatic qualification for the Millrose Games Finals on Saturday February 15.

One of the highlights of the meet is the high school mile run. Last year, three girls from PA finished 1-2-3 in the trials and punched tickets to the finals. Two of them are back to try again. Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic won the Millrose Trials race last season. Tomorrow’s race will mark her first race since the cross country state championships. She ran 4:54.18 in the race, just ahead of Pennridge junior Marissa Sheva (4:54.90). Sheva has been looking to find her groove this season, but a 3:00 1000 meter win this past Friday should give her confidence for tomorrow. Joining the duo will be Foot Locker National Champion Tessa Barrett of Abington Heights. The state 3000 meter record holder will drop down in distance for a Millrose ticket. She finished 10th in this race last year, but has soared into the national elite class since. Sophomore Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley will enter the competition for the first time. Thus far, Clahane has risen to the occasion on the big stage. Tomorrow’s race is an opportunity to put her name on the national map with a good performance.

The boys will be represented by Germantown Academy’s Sam Ritz and Holy Ghost Prep’s Christian Kardish. Ritz carries a 4:11 personal best from the spring of 2013, while Kardish has run 4:18 for 1600 meters in 2012. Good luck to the PA participants!

Friday January 17 will be remembered this season as the night when the distance medley relay came to life. We had two PA top five’s and one national top five performance at Yale earlier in the evening. Down at Lehigh, two more teams joined the party. Springside Chestnut Hill won a tight dual with Cardinal O’Hara to win the distance medley 12:21.42 to 12:22.60. The performances are 2nd and 3rd best in the state and they are also number 7 and 8 in the country!

Last night was also a big head to head match up in the high jump between 2011 indoor state champion Megan McCloskey of Germantown Academy and Claudine Andre of Upper Darby. Both girls cleared 5-7, but on this night, Andre took home the gold, winning on misses. In the shot put, Macey Tanseco of Perkiomen Valley threw a lifetime best of 40-4.50 to win the shot put over Justine Morgan of Upper Dublin to improve on her PA#4 standing. Morgan’s 39-1 is an improvement on her personal best by over 8 inches and is her 2nd PR in six weeks.

The final headline of the night was the domination of Cheltenham in the individual sprint events. The quadruple of Ciara Leonard (T-PA#2 8.86 60 meter hurdles), Katelyn Jackson (7.77 60 meters), Chanel Brissett (26.04 200 meters) and Nicole Burke (PA#7 59.42 400 meters) all took home gold medals in four of the five sprint events.

Other highlights from the night include a win for Paul Robeson in the 4x200 meter relay over Springside Chestnut Hill and Cheltenham (1:46.46 to 1:46.66 to 1:47.23).
