AAA champions Unionville girls made their first appearace as champions at the annual Oakbourne Relay event. In 2013, this event started the long run to the state title and an NXN finals berth. The 2014 race was yet another positive result for Unionville, as they took home the first three relay spots on their way to a 6 minute victory. The team of Anna Juul and Jillian Brislin ran a combined 24:37 for four 2 mile legs, with each competitor running two legs. They were 7 seconds better than Olivia Young and Molly Wentz. Kacie Breeding and Leah Talley completed the 1-2-3 sweep for Unionville.
 
For the boys, AAA champions West Chester Henderson rolled out their new team after many of their championship runners moved on to college. In their first meet, the Warriors finished in 3rd place behind two top District 1 teams. Conestoga and Downingtown West were only separated by 30 seconds, with Conestoga edging the victory. Conestoga were boosted by 1-2 finishes. Andrew Marston and James Cooper were the overall winners, with Killian Nelson and PJ Murray taking the 2nd position. The Barton brothers, Ryan and Charlie were 3rd with Henry Sappey and Ben Ryherd taking 4th for the Whippets. 
 
PREVIEW: Unionville girls compete in this special 4x2 mile relay for the first time as state champions. West Chester Henderson boys will show off a new look after a mass exodus of graduating state championship runners. Young Downingtown West boys will debut tomorrow with a team some feel can make a big impact in 2014. Conestoga boys will make a return to this invitational with high expectations entering the new season.

Alex Fitch of Liberty came through on top after a tight contest against runner up Joe Espinal of Wilson and Whitehall's Gabe Lamm. Fitch's 16:20 was only three seconds better than Espinal and ten seconds better than Lamm. New Hope Solebury held off Notre Dame East Stroudsburg 31-38 to win the Class A crown, Allentown Central Catholic held on 99-104 over Northwestern Lehigh to win AA, and Liberty won the AAA crown with a comfortable 37-63 win over Whitehall.
 
For the girls, Claudia Sacks of Allentown Central Catholic won the individual gold in 19:39 to hold off Kassi Yocco of Bethlehem Catholic by 7 seconds. Notre Dame East Stroudsburg scored 22 points to defeat Moravian Academy by 11 to win the Class A crown, Northwestern Lehigh ran a 51 second spread to win the AA race with 54 points, and Liberty won the AAA crown by 30 points over Whitehall.

Kevin Dulak of West Mifflin led his team to three of the top four overall places with a victory in 18:27. Zak Schrott (3rd) and Russell Smith (4th) represented the rest of the trio. In the girls race, Leah Cifluentis completed the individual title sweep for West Mifflin with a winning time of 22:38. Teammate Jenna Zabelsky made it a 1-3 finish for West Mifflin.

22nd Gateway Invitational

Alexis O'Shea of West Allegheny got off to a winning start in her opening race of the season. The new kid on the District 7 AAA block was victorious in 20:59 to win by over 30 seconds. Her performance was good enough to give her team 2nd place, 10 points behind champions Bethel Park, who were led by three in the top 9 and four in the top 15.

For the boys, Jake Susalla of Plum ran 17:28 to win the gold medal on the opening Saturday of the season. Norwin placed three in the top 14 to come away with the team title over Bethel Park 77-86.

39th Cliff Robbins Invitational

A marker was set down by Lake-Lehman's Dominic Hockenbury. The junior picked up where he left off in May when he won state gold, controlling the race and winning by a wide margin in 15:51! That time is the best in PA by 14 seconds in the early going.

 

 

In the team standings, Scranton Prep's senior leadership earned them their first win of the season. Four seniors led the way for the District 2 squad led by a 4th place finish from Ben Evans and a 55 second 1-5 spread. Their score of 74 points was 59 points better than 2nd place Berwick.

In the girls race, Scranton Prep completed the team title sweep while adding an individual gold medal to a strong opening weekend. Erin Feeney led Scranton Prep with a winning performance of 19:40, 18 seconds better than Lindsay Oremus of AA champions Dallas. Scranton Prep had two in the top ten and four in the top 14 to secure the win. Council Rock North finished 2nd with 94 points.

Isaac Wilson of North Clarion held off Dan Wilcko of Fairview by a narrow 7 second margin to win his first gold medal of the season in 16:35.1. In the team standings, Butler was the only team to place two in the top ten of a very wide open competition. They were also the only team to have five inside the top 30, which was good enough to win the team title over Meadville 95-139.

In the girls competition, the North East duo of Raechel White and Kate McIntosh got off to a flying start! The pair finished 1-2 in the race, with White winning in 19:34.4 and McIntosh finishing 10 seconds behind her. That performance was the boost the team needed to win their first invitational of the season! Villa Maria Academy finished 2nd with a different looking varsity squad compared to what teams will see in the very near future.

Kelsey Potts and her Mount Lebanon team came flying out of the blocks on the opening Saturday of the 2014 season. Potts, a state title contender, ran like one with a dominating performance up front, running 19:04 to win by over 70 seconds! Her performance also broke the course record held by Penn Relays mile champion Amelia Palladion of West Virginia by 16 seconds! Her teammates also performed well, placing four in the top ten to secure the team title with a score of 24 points.
 

In the boys race, Mount Lebanon put on a perfect performance, securing the top five places, and six of the top seven overall to leave with a team title and a perfect score of 15 points. The scoring five of champion Matthew Stone (17:56), Ian Harris, Todd Gunzenhauser, Bryce Brandenstein, and Jamie Kozorra finished an impressive 23 seconds apart to put their season into high gear!

State College and Altoona boys had their first of many head to head match ups on Saturday, and a tight margin went in favor of the reigning District 6 AAA champions. State College had four in the top nine and five in the top 13 to edge out their district rivals 37-46. Alex Milligan led the charge for State College with a 2nd place finish, while Brad Foust finished right behind him in 3rd. The two schools combined to place eight of the top ten finishers. Individual honors went to one of the AA state contenders, William Kachman of Bedford. The junior started the season the right foot with a winning performance of 16:11 to hold off Milligan by 13 seconds.

In the girls race, State College had to settle for silver medal honors behind District 1's Coatesville. Freshman Brooke Hutton led the way for Coatesville with a 2nd place finish in 19:32 for an impressive high school debut. The next four Coatesville teammates, all sophomores, finished in the top 35 to hold off State College 103-113. Tori Dippold of Elk Country Catholic showed that life without Kennedy Weisner is off to a good start. The senior earned her 1st victory of the season with a time of 19:22, ten seconds ahead of Hutton.

Lexi Bible of Hickory defended her home turf on the opening Saturday of the season to get her big season off to a good start. The junior won the gold medal with a time of 20:05, 8 seconds better than Laurel's Alison Filer, and 10 seconds ahead of teammate Haley Boyd. Behind Filer, Laurel were impressive in their season debut, placing four in the top ten to score 51 points and defeat West Middlesex by 14 points.

The chase for the individual gold came down to a close finish between three runners, with senior Bradley Calleja of Sharpsville (17:43) holding off freshman Zachary Tingley (17:47) and senior Kyle Boyd (17:50) to earn the victory. Boyd's 3rd place finish catapulted Hickory to the team title with four in the top 20 and a team score of 83 points, nearly 40 points better than Wilmington.

 
PREVIEW: West Middlesex boys will be back to defend their team title after winning this meet comfortably last season. David Johnson led the team with a 5th place finish last season. The girls competition was much closer, as Hickory held on to a 3 point win over Laurel. Lexi Bible finished 2nd overall for Hickory ahead of Laurel's Alison Filer. Bible is a top contender in District 10 this season. Will she get the start she desires to put her season on track?

In this 2.35 mile opener, Zach Brehm of Carlisle got off to a winning start, running 12:12 to hold off Dan Green of James Buchanan for the gold. His team placed three in the top four and five in the top 12 to win their opener.

In the girls race, Kierra Zack of Northern held off the challenge of freshman Abby Yourkavitch of Chambersburg to win her first race of the season in 14:55, six seconds better than Yourkavitch. Carlisle placed three in the top six and five in the top 14 to cruise to the team crown.
