Highlighting the weekend... The weather was perfect. The venue perfection. The athletes primed to assault the record books of two states in the two-mile at the 2ND HENDERSON INV on 5/4. With the help of two Henderson runners, Boyertown's Jason Weller and each other, Colts Neck New Jersey's Craig Forys and Unionville's Paul Springer went one-two in what may be the best prep 2-mile race on PA soil. When the clock stopped, Forys ran 8:49.99, Springer 8:52.86 and Weller 9:08.42. Forys broke the 8:52.0 record held by Charlie Logan of Bernards in 1979. Springer broke the 8:56.56 2-mile record set by Lewisburg's Chris Spooner in 2004. Germantown Academy's Elliott Rhodes ran 1:52.99 to win a loaded 800. Not to be lost in the state record atmosphere of the 2-mile race, Germantown Academy's Elliot Rhodes ran the top 800 time in PA with a 1:52.96. Rhodes led the race wire-to-wire... an impressive achievement in such a deep field. Six other runners cracked two minutes. Norristown's Peter Selby dominated the 100 hurdles in 14.88, and anchored the winning 4x400 to a 3:25.71. Ali Nolan of Perkiomen Valley (5:02.38) and Heather Giovagnoli of Spring Ford (5:03.88) were the top two PA girls in the 1600, behind two sub-five Tatnall DE athletes. Henderson's Carly Hamond ran a solo 10:51.03 3200. Downingtown West's Christen Arnold leapt 18-07 to take the long jump and ran 12.25 to win the 100. Rustin's Alanna Owens won the shot put and discus. At BALDWIN, Breehana Jacobs, Laurel Highlands, won three events, the 100 in 11.93, the 200 in 24.64 and the 400 in 55. 33. Soph AJ Hobart of Baldwin went 4:12.30 to win the 1600. And Chris Wolfe, also of Baldwin, ran 49.79 and 155.05 for the 400-800 double. One of the big three PA meets on the first Friday in May, the WEST CENTRAL COACHES MEET in Altoona always shows off the best talent in this region. As one person who saw the meet said, "The Seymours put on quite a show." The Seymours are Central Cambria sisters Carly and Kelsey. Junior Carly set two meet records, while freshman Kelsey set one of her own. The girls dominated everything from the 800 to 3200 and posted the best times of the day in those three events, whether AA or AAA. Kelsey – whom Carly says has the best pure speed in the family – ran 2:18.01 for 800. Carly set a season-goal of breaking five minutes, and ran 4:58.13 for 1600, and added a 10:40.97 3200 win. Both are PRs. United's Eric Skedel now has the #2 javelin throw of the season in PA, going 208-04. Derry's Amanda Palenchar cleared 12 in the pole vault. A rivalry of sorts appears to be taking shape in the vertical jumps between junior Kristin Brandt of Central Mountain and sophomore Bethany Lender of Altoona. Lender won both the long and triple, both credited with 17-01.50 in the long jump, and Lender going 37-04.50 to Brandt's 37-00 in the triple jump. Altoona AJ Alexander went 10.95 and 22.02 to win both the 100 and 200. AJ has to be looking in his rearview mirror though, because State College freshman Alex Kenney was 2nd by just .04 in the 100 and by just .11 in the 200. At the 4/30 BELLWOOD INVITATIONAL, Bedford's Brandi Harris leapt 18-0 in the long jump and added a 5-0 win in the high jump. Eric Skedel of United threw the jav 197-07. At the 5/2 LIBERTY LAST CHANCE MEET, Becky Frey of Liberty cleared 12-05.50, with Easton's Abby Schaffer just 4" shorter. On 5/3 at the TROJAN TRACK CLASSIC @ Wissahickon, Joe Berry, fresh off is Penn Relays record in the pole vault, upped his PR by 3/4-inch to 16-4, breaking a 14-year-old meet record by a lot of air. Getting ready for the Brandon Bing show at Districts and States, Cheltenham's Bing put up some impressive times, going 10.75 for 100,  21.88 for 200, and a smokin' 48.26 for 400. (Think the Eagles should take a look?) Brittany Ducally of Wissahickon went 12.32 and 25.81 for the 100-200 double. At the DELCO GIRLS' CHAMPS, Karen Shump is using her pitcher's experience to really have a breakthrough season in the discus. She is now 15 feet over her 2006 PR with a throw of 148-07. At the HELMAN INVITATIONAL @ Pennridge HS, the Central Bucks East girls went 3:58.9 in the 4x400, and also captured the 4x100 in 50.0. Kate Ross of CB East continues to have a strong spring, running a solo 5:05.7 1600. Ryann Krais, Methacton, ran 56.1 for the 400. Nick Coberly, Pennridge, went 49.3 to win the boy's one lapper. At the KEN MONTGOMERY MEMORIAL @ William Tennent, Mike Pio doubled on his home track with a 1:56.34 for 800 and 4:26.36 for 1600. Teammate Kayla Hennessy went 15.35 and 45.30 to take the 100 and 300 hurdles. The Neshaminy boys ran 43.57 and 3:28.10 to take the 4x100 and 4x400. St. Basil posted a 9:34.31 4x800. At the PINE-RICHLAND INVITATIONAL, Brashear was powered in the sprints by Jeren Debardelaben, who clocked a 10.7 in the prelims before going 11.2 to win the finals of the 100. He ran 21.4 in the prelims of the 200 and needed 22.2 seconds to take the final. His 4x100 ran a 44.2. Pine-Richland's Terhea Doaty ran 14.9 to win the 100 hurdles, and 45.7 to take the 300 hurdles. The Quaker Valley girls posted a 49.9 4x100. Christin Bridge, Pine-Richland, won the discus with a throw of 117-01 and the shot put, going 39-11.50. At the 2-day SHANER MEET @ Wyomissing, preliminary heats saw the girls 200 meter meet record broken by Schulkyll Valley's Devan Coon in a scorching 24.96 FAT. The pace for the boys' 1600 was fast as Boyertown's Jason Weller, fresh off of a 9:05 3200 the night before at West Chester Henderson, and Exeter Senior Nick Hilton duked it out with out-kicking Hilton and taking the race by a second 4:12.2 to 4:13, breaking a 17-year old county record. Justin Germani of Daniel Boone and Cameron Pierson of Tulpehocken each cleared 15 feet in the pole vault. At the LOWER MERION INVITATIONAL, Swenson's Shanae Bailer swept the 100 and 400, going 12.59 and 56.66. Teammate Tyrell Moon took care of the boy's 200 in 22.50 and the 400 in 49.59. Getting some solo 800's in, North Penn's Steve Franks ran 1:57.92 and Justin Brookheimer 1:58.06. At the BLUE STREAK RELAYS, Lancaster Mennonite's DMR was anchored to a 12:41.5 win by Lindsey Shertzer, earning a narrow victory over Hempfield's 12:42.6. The Milton Hershey guys posted a quick 4x400, winning in 3:25.2. Penn Manor's Alyssa Girvin threw the discus 132-05. At the CEDAR CLIFF RELAYS, Cedar Crest's boys smoked the 4x400 in 3:18.5. Harrisburg's girls took the 4x100 in 48.5, the 4x200 in 1:42.5, and the 4x400 in 4:02.1. The Cumberland Valley DMR ran a fast 12:26.7. For the boys DMR, it was Central Dauphin in 10:27.4. At the  COUDERSPORT'S INVITATIONAL, the home team's Emily Giannotti ran 11:25.7 to win the 3200. The boys' jav was close - 5:" close, as Tom Cooney of Smethport threw 165-01 to beat Coudersport's Drew Levavaseur. At the JAMES CROSS WILKES-BARRE INVITATIONAL, Anita James of Pocono Mountain West went 18-01.75 in the long jump, and 36-04.50 in the triple.  Tunkhannock's Tihagee Daughtry was quick in the 100 (11.24) and 200 (23.24). At the LADY ROCKER INVITATIONAL @ Council Rock North, Kayla Hennessy ruled the hurdles, running 15.04 for 100 and 44.54 for 300. St. Basil's Kathleen Davies set a meet record of 5:02.87 in the 1600. Perfect weather. The perfect race.

The weather was perfect – 57º, no wind, low humidity. The venue, absolute perfection. And the athletes, primed and promising to assault the record books of two states in the two-mile – with hand-timed 3000's and FAT 3200's for good measure.

The results would show two new state all-time bests at several distances by two talented seniors, Craig Forys of Colts Neck NJ, and Paul Springer of Unionville PA. The full results would show other great performances, including the 1:52.96 800 by Elliot Rhodes of Germantown Academy. (full summary below).

But this night belonged to the 2 mile crowd.

Proving that it takes more than two runners to break two records, Forys and Springer smartly used the planned and completely selfless support of two West Chester Henderson runners and Boyertown's Jason Weller; along with each other; to post what is most probably the best one-two prep 2-mile ever run on a PA track. When the clock stopped, Forys ran 8:48.99, Springer 8:52.86 and Weller 9:08.42. (See Splits and Records below).

The race in leaders: top two pix laps 2-3,
followed by start of laps

4, 5, 6, 7, 8... and Forys' finish

In only his second year as a high school coach, Unionville's Bill Moss spent the hours leading up to the race virtually glued to the finish line area, talking about the race to come and his amazement at the athlete who will be leaving his program in a few short weeks. As Moss watched the start of the race, it looked for a brief second like the perfectly laid plans may hit the track. Springer was pushed to the inside and stumbled just after the start, buried in the back of the pack. After righting himself, he quickly worked his way to the outside and within 50 meters, had settled in behind West Chester Henderson's Andrew Jervis and Chris Aldrich, along with Forys and Weller.

The race was on.

Henderson coach Kevin Kelly had wanted to have an elite two-mile field since he successfully launched this meet in 2006. Forys, Springer and Weller fit that wish perfectly. Working with Colts Neck coach Jim Schlentz and Moss, the three developed a plan to share the load. On the drawing board, the plan called for Jervis to take the first two laps, Aldrich to take the third, and then for Weller, Forys and Springer to each lead the 4th through 6th laps before letting the race become every man for himself.

That's how they drew it up. And except for Springer's blip at the beginning, that's exactly how it unfolded.

Forys was all praise for the track itself and his competitors immediately following the race. "I can't say enough about the track and facilty... and the guys in the race, they were the reason it all happened."

Jervis led the first lap in 65.6, and followed up with a 67.1 for a 2:12.7 800. Aldrich picked it up for the third lap, splitting a 68. Again, Forys..."The Henderson kids did it perfectly."

Springer describes the plan and how each athlete got ready to take their turn at the front, keeping the pace that would be so vital to setting any records. "We'd each move out by the 300 mark and then cut back in after the next person had passed."

Lap four was the responsibility of Weller. He nailed it, running a 66.0 that Schlentz says "made the race."

Heading into laps five and six, both Forys and Springer knew it was crunch time. First up front for the start of the final mile was Forys. "The 5th and 6th laps are usually the ones that hurt the most," Springer understated. "So Craig running a 66 on the 5th lap was great."

Forys was equally as complimentary of Springer when talking about the Unionville runner's effort on the 6th lap. "He dropped a 66. That kind of made the race right there because that's where I was in pain and if he wasn't there to pull that, I don't know where I would have ended up."

Forys said Springer let him go by for the 7th lap. At that point, Forys said, he was feeling great again. "So I started rolling with 600 left to pick it up a little."

Springer says that even when Forys opened a small gap, he still felt strong. "But I don't think I quite had the pop since I haven't done any true speed yet."

Forys continued to open a gap and had about a two second lead as they hit the bell lap. Forys had run a low-65, while Springer was a 66. As Forys opened it up on the backstretch, he closed through the 3200 mark in a 61.5, and according to Schlentz, ran 2:06.7 over the final 800.

Not to be lost in this race were the great times by Weller, 3rd place in a PR 9:08.42 and 4th place 9:18.92 by Germantown Friends' Max Kaulbach, whose mark set a Friends' League and school 3200 meter record by over 24 seconds. Weller was pleased with his time, especially considering that he had a tough dual meet on Wednesday, running the 800, 1600, 3200 and 400. "I tried to stay with them, but it was a tough pace. We were really flying. Weller hopes to join the sub-9 club at states.

As for Forys and Springer, they both have the Nike Outdoor Nationals 2-mile on their respective radars. "If the weather is like last year" (70's and comfortable) says Springer, "we may be able to do it again." Forys was simply happy to get it done now. "I had a shot last year, but with low iron, it didn't work out. With this weather, this is probably my last shot to do it."

Forys will run the requisite New Jersey meets, but isn't expecting to do anything quick until NON, and then a week later, in the 1500 at USATF Junior Nationals. He's anxious for that race after splitting 4:04 point on his DMR anchor at the Penn Relays. Springer will focus solely on the 3200 at districts and states, and then go for mile PR on this same track on June 8th at the Pennsylvania Distance Festival, a week prior to NON.

Both Forys and Springer will look back on May 4th as a special night of racing. Both will remember the help they received from Jervis, Aldrich and Weller. But both won't forget the contributions they received from each other. "Hopefully," Forys said, "Paul got a little bit out of me helping, because he helped me a lot."

No Craig, we don't think anyone who was privileged to see this race with forget either.

Boys Distance Summary by Miles Becker:

While most in PA were focused on the amazing 2 mile at Henderson, the prestigious Baldwin Invitational once again produced very fast times and a very deep meet all around, highlighted by Breehana Jacobs and the boys of Baldwin.  The first race of the day, the boys 4x800 meter relay, featured some of the best teams in the state, including Baldwin, Great Valley, Bradford, McDowell, Mt. Lebanon, Avonworth, Latrobe and Norwin.  Dave Adley of Baldwin led at the first exchange with a 2:00.1 split, with Shroy Mukherjee of Bradford closing fast.  Baldwin’s Brandon Hahn ran a huge pr of 1:59.h, with a blazing last 200 hundred to retake the lead as he handed off to sophomore TJ Hobart.  Hobart, fresh off of a 1:53 split at McDowell, once again produced, as he gapped the field with a 1:54.0 and gave Baldwin anchor Chris Wolfe the chance for both meet and school records.  Wolfe finished alone in 1:56.x and gave Baldwin a PA #2 7:50.80.  Great Valley’s trip west paid off, as they came through in 7:56.44, followed by Bradford in 8:02.9, Mt. Lebanon in 8:05.7 and McDowell in 8:06.6.  In the boys’ mile, TJ Hobart and Scott Van Kooten (Central Catholic) faced off again, and like TJ’s 4:15 against SVK earlier this year, Scott went right to the lead.  Following SVK through splits of 59-2:05.h-3:12, Hobart took the lead with a lap to go and used his 49. 400m speed to finish in a school record and (US #2 for soph’s) 4:12.3.  This race was especially deep, with Van Kooten coming home in 4:17.8, and junior Kyle Gibson (Canon-Mac) running a 6 second pr in 4:19.3.

Matt Molitor (Latrobe) 4:21.35
Rob Miller (Butler Area) 4.22.61
Josh Nadzam (Monaca) 4:23.85

Dave Adley (Baldwin) 4:24.38

Chris Wolfe added to the slew of Baldwin gold medals with a 49.79 victory in the 400 in a duel with Aaron Fitzpatrick of McDowell.  Later Wolfe took his third gold medal of the day in the 800, when he took off around the outside of Latrobe’s Cole Klinchok (1:55.84) with 200 to go and responded to a gutsy move by Rick Carlson (1:55.25) on the final straight.  Finishing in 1:55.0 and once again showing his speed down the homestretch, Wolfe’s triple proved he is ready to battle with Rhodes, Lobb and co. from the East at states.  The Boys 3200m did not have the national level caliber of Forys and Springer’s  sub-9’s, but Ben Hahn (Smethport) did throw down an impressive 9:09.7(4:35-4:34) to establish himself as the favorite for the 3200 in AA.  Bryan Beegle, Zac Ross, Lucas Z, and Mike Stolar all came in under 9:21, and Western PA juniors Chris Cipro (9:22), Andrew Geist (9:22), and Justin Taylor (9:32) capped the top 8 of a 3200 that had 12 guys under 9:49.  Chris Wolfe and TJ Hobart, along with their Baldwin teammates closed the meet with yet another stunning performance, as Hobart set Wolfe up with a blazing fast (48.8-49.00), Wolfe came through down the homestretch one last time as he once again edged Aaron Fitzpatrick of McDowell.

South Carolina-bound Breehana Jacobs is looking like she's ready to go out on a (multi) championship note. Her 11.93-24.64-55.33 triple makes her #1 or #2 in the state. Neshannock's Kacey Gibson popped a nice distance double of 5:00.30 and 10:53.10. Seneca Valley (9:26.38) and Latrobe (9:27.45) battled out a fast 4x800. Thomas Jefferson's Ashlee Moore (40-10.50) and Hempfield's Kim Kanala (40-01), were one-two in the shot. But Kanala was really on top of her game in the discus, throwing 144-03. Hempfield's Weston Banks was a double winner, going 61-08 in the shot and 179-04 in the discus. His shot mark improves his #1 in the PA ranking. McDowell's Emmanuel Overare leapt 46-02.50 in the triple jump. Connor Barrett, Seneca Valley, cleared 6-08 in the high jump. Sean Gil of North Allegheny cleared 15-06, and McDowell's Alexandra Acker, 12-00 in the pole vault.

5/4-5 78th Annual Shaner Meet @ Wyomissing HS

RESULTS POSTED

By Nick Hilton, Exeter HS

Conditions couldn't have been more condusive for quick times and meet records at the 78th annual John H. Shaner track meet at Wyomissing High School.  The two day event was highlighted by numerous meet records  and races that brought the crowd to their feet.  Friday night's preliminary heats saw the girls 200 meter meet record broken by Schulkyll Valley's Devan Coon in a scorching 24.96 FAT.  Friday night also saw the finals in the men's and women's 3200 meter run in which Governor Mifflin's Lindsay Topper kicked it down the homestretch to break the tape in 11:28.18, closely followed by Boyertown's Elizabeth Simpson in 11:29.11.  On the boys'' side, a hard fought close race left Mike Stone from Wyomissing with the win in 9:51.44, followed by Nate Lovitt, also of Wyomissing, in 9:54.44 and Zach Barker of Conrad Weiser in 9:54.97.  Saturday afternoon not only brought great weather but also some of the most exciting races in Berks County all year.  The first race of the day, the boys'' 3200 meter relay, came down to the final stretch with Conrad Weiser pulling out the clutch victory in 8:12, closely tailed by Wyomissing (8:13) and Governor Mifflin (8:13.92).  This set the stage for the highly anticipated boys' 1600 meter run.  The pace was fast and competitors dropped like flies, leaving Boyertown's Jason Weller, fresh off of a 9:05 3200 the night before at West Chester Henderson, and Exeter Senior Nick Hilton to duke it out.  Hilton stayed on Weller's tail until the final lap when he decided to put his chips in the middle and make his move, Weller didn't panic and just tailed Hilton all the way around the track.  The pair reached the home straight, and Weller made his move out-kicking Hilton and taking the race by a second.  Weller finished the race in 4:12.2 breaking a 17-year old county record in the process, as well as setting a new meet record.  The surprising Hilton finished the race in a PR of 4:13.  As the day went on more impressive performances were turned in.  Devan Coon not only finished the job in the 200 meter finals, but also won the 400 meters in 56 seconds.  In pole-vaulting action Justin Germani of Daniel Boone and Cameron Pierson of Tulpehocken dualed up to the lofty heights of 15 feet, with Germani eventually taking the gold.  In more relay action the Wilson girls 4x100 meter relay took home the gold and also set a meet record in 49.96.

5/4 West Central Coaches Meet @ Mansion Park, Altoona

RESULTS POSTED

One of the big three PA meets on the first Friday in May, it always shows off the best talent in this region. Westmont Hilltop's Karlee McQuillen threw 140-02. Tussey Mountain's Jordan Donaldson ran 49.83 and 1:57.81 to take the 400 and 800. State College's Peter Wandell ran 1:56.91 in the AAA race. Amber Valimont of Hempfield ran 5:07.39 and 11:18.74 for the AAA distance double. Altoona's 4x100 ran 42.35 and 3:24.76 in the 4x400. Dubois' D.J. Smith ran 38.89 for the 300 hurdles.
