A couple of PA track history questions to get you thinking (now with answers)...

From time to time we get historical questions that are not as simple as just checking the meet archives or sending a well-placed email or two. And during the past month, we have received two questions that fit in that category.  It didn't take long for the answers...

Question #1: What is the fastest prep girls' 4x1600 in PA history? The fastest this season is 21:03 by Archbishop Prendergast on June 3rd at the Eastern States Championships at Iona Prep in New York.

Answer: State College H.S. ran 20:52.9c in 1981 for the 4xMile. (That's 4x1600m converted to 4xMile) At 1.8 seconds per runner,the 4x1600m time would be 20:45.7.

Question #2: When was the last time a PA boys team won the indoor and outdoor state titles in the same year?

Answer: Wissahickon Boys, 1982 - Indoors and Outdoors AND Glen Mills boys on the Indoor title and Outdoor title concurrently in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1999 - Pennsbury boys, 2003

Question #3: How many other schools have won the AAA team titles on both the girls and boys side? (can be different years).

Answer: Pennwood's boys ('85 and '98) and girls (not sure of the year) both have won AAA Championships. Also, Strath Haven's boys '94 and girls '06 have won AAA Championships

A correction: Glen Mills won both indoor and outdoor boys titles in 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2000. Between 1991 and 2002, GM won 16 state titles indoor and outdoor under head coach Barry Swanson.

Norristown High School won both the boys and girls PIAA AAA state championships in 1976 at Shippensburg. It was the first year the state meet was held there.

Tony Darden and Netta Young of Norristown High School both won the 100, 220 and 440 in the meet. Young won the state girls title by herself as she was the only competitor for Norristown. Darden headed up a three man team for the Eagles. Bob Bridge won the 300 hurdles and Wayne Gardner was fourth in the triple jump to give the Eagles team titles in boy's and girl's track and field.

Norristown achieved everlasting glory as no school has ever had a boy and girl win the sprint triple in the same year. They even bettered that effort by being the only school to ever win both the boy's and girl's state team championship in the same year.

The previous year in 1975 the Norristown boy's team won the first ever PTFCA Indoor Championship and in the spring were crowned PIAA AAA Outdoor Champions. Obviously this marked the first time this happened in the history of track and field in PA. The 1975 PTFCA indoor championships were held at East Stroudsburg University.
