Week 1 XC Preview: Brophy, Potts, Hockenbury make debuts

FULL WEEKEND SCHEDULE

John Sharp

Jake Brophy and his Central Bucks East team will make their season debut on Friday. The state champion won this race last season to kick start his huge year. His team will look for a good start, as they will square off against rivals and 2014 state qualifiers Central Bucks West. Rock Fortna was 3rd at this meet a year ago and will test his fitness against the state champion. Council Rock North and Pennridge will look to make a strong start to the season. Tucker Desko will lead the way for Pennridge, while Andrew Hanna will look to tussle up top for Council Rock North.

The girls race will feature state qualifier Lotte Black of Wissahickon. After winning her league title and placing in the top 15 at distict 1, Black is ready for a breakout season in 2015. Behind her, Sophie Gustafson of Upper Dublin, Hannah Morris of Central Bucks East, and Julianna Kardish of Mount St Joseph's will look for a good start to the season. The team race should be a close one. CB East will look to mount another state meet berth, while Archbishop Wood are looking to perform well on their home course. Mount St Joseph's and a young Hatboro Horsham team will hope for a top five finish.

Northampton

One of Maryland's top teams, Severna Park, will travel up to the Lehigh Valley to test themselves against some PA competition. Severna Park have qualified for the last two NXN Finals and their depth will be put to the test. Andrew Forsyth and Joshua Tucker will lead the way for the Maryland champions. Parkland will make their debut and try to pull the upset with a team that will rely on pack running to help them through. Hailemichael Geiger will lead the way.

In the girls race, Mikayla Stoudt of Parkland will aim for a fast start to the season after missing the state meet a year ago. She will be challenged by Lexi VanBlunk of Downingtown East and Lindsey Gallagher of hosts Northampton. Downingtown East will battle with Parkland for the team title.

Cal U of PA

Kelsey Potts of Mount Lebanon will kick off her final high school season defending her Cal U Invite title. It was one of her three wins of last season. Her performance will look to motivate the rest of her Mount Lebanon teammates, as they hope to set down a marker to the rest of their District 7 rivals.

In the boys race, Potts' teammate Todd Gunzenhauser will lead his boys team to the line. Mount Lebanon have been very dominant at this meet in recent seasons, and have recorded a team sweep of this meet a couple seasons ago.

Oakbourne Relays

The annual 4x2 mile relay hosted by West Chester Henderson will feature preseason favorites Downingtown West boys making their debut. West Chester Henderson, Conestoga, and Nick Dahl led Germantown Friends will also send teams up. How strong will Downingtown West be in their first race?

The Downingtown West girls will be led by Aislinn Devlin and Emma Planck. They will face off against state runners up Unionville, Conestoga, and Germantown Friends. Will Unionville still have the depth to make another title challenge? How good can the Downingtown West duo be?

Big Valley

Brooke Hutton of Coatesville finished 2nd at this meet this season, the only regular season invitational race she did not win. This time around, she will be a big favorite to take home her 6th career cross country gold medal. Natasha Fedkina will lead State College and her squad will be the favorites to win the meet. In the boys race, Alex Milligan will lead State College to the line as they look to start the season well. Rivals Altoona will look to earn an early season upset on their district rivals.

Cliff Robbins

Dominic Hockenbury of Lake Lehman will make his season debut with a Cliff Robbins title defense. Hockenbury broke 16 minutes at this meet last season to run the fastest time of the week last year.
