Madeleine Davison takes second at Van Cortlandt Park race

In her first season as an unattached runner, Madeleine Davison has ventured outside the friendly confines of Pennsylvania and away from courses that she knows well, turning in solid results at each new course state by state.

For her final tune-up before the Foot Locker Northeast Regional, the high school senior left the Keystone State again, heading this time to Van Cortlandt Park for the New York Road Runners Cross Country Championships and a preview of the Bronx course that she will race Nov. 28.

Davison continued to build on her earlier successes in 2015, crossing the line 16th overall in 17:47 for the 5,000-meter course. The time is a personal best on the demanding layout as she was fourth in the 2014 Foot Locker regional in the Bronx in 17:53.6.

"I feel pretty happy about my run today," Davison said of Sunday's runner-up finish in the women's division. "I was able to stay with my race plan for the most part, and I think running this race gave me a much better feel for the Van Cortlandt course. I couldn't have asked for a better way to prepare for Foot Locker Northeast."

First across the line in the women's division - and 12th overall - was another runner with a Foot Locker Nationals appearance on her resume, Megan Curham of Warren, N.J. Currently taking a year off from Princeton for an internship, the five-time All-American was clocked in 17:29.

Curham was second in the 2012 regional at Van Cortlandt in 18:08.5 and then placed 14th at Balboa Park. In her first two years at Princeton, Curham has been an All-American twice in cross country, once indoors in the 5,000 and twice outdoors in the 10,000.

Davison is one of five returning national qualifiers from the girls' race expected to compete in this year's Northeast qualifier to the Foot Locker final in San Diego. The top 10 finishers in each of four regionals will compete in the national final on December 12.
