PTFCA Carnival - Girls' Recap

SPRINTS/HURDLES

Chanel Brissett of Cheltenham just keeps progressing. The senior ran a US#1 of 8.30 (narrowly topping Tara Davis' 8.31) in the finals to take the 60-meter hurdles. Brissett ran 8.44 at the Armory last week, so she looks like she could be in a spot to challenge her own state record in the next few weeks.

The 60-meter hurdles at the Carnival also the top four times in PA of the season. Susquehanna Township's Yasmin Brooks was second in a PA#2 8.68 and Perkiomen Valley's Christina Warren was third in a PA#4 8.88. Upper Dublin's Madison Langley-Walker was fourth in the finals, despite hitting a hurdle. She did run an 8.82 in the prelims for a PA#3.

Watch the 60m hurdle finals below:

Brissett attempted the 60 hurdles/60 dash double (one she will likely go for again at states). But it was Liberty's Jaylyn Aminu, the reigning state champ in the 100 meters from outdoors, that came out on top in the 60-meter dash finals. Aminu ran 7.67 from lane one to win. Brissett took second, mere minutes after the hurdle finals, running 7.69. Saucon Valley's Talitha Diggs was third in 7.77.

North Penn's Uche Nwogwugwu had a big meet, starting with a strong race in the 400 meters. Nwogwugwu, who spent the first half of the indoor season shelved with a knee injury, clocked a 57.48 for the win. Penn Wood's Janae Pitt was second in 59.15.

In the 200 meters, Norristown's Jayana Webb ran away with the win. Webb ran 25.17, a solid flat track time. Paul Robeson's Tikki Wise was second in 25.78. Webb and Wise are both ones to watch as we creep closer to what should be a very competitive states in this event.

DISTANCE

The mile was a super competitive race that featured a great finish. Abington Heights' Katie Dammer took the lead with a few laps to go and was able to hold off some hard chargers for the win. Dammer clocked a PA#4 5:05.67. Northern's Marlee Starliper was second in a PA#6 5:05.99 and Abington's Kelly Jawork took third in a PA#7 5:06.26.

North Penn's Mikaela Vlasic ran well to win the 800 meters in 2:17.79 after running the 4x800 earlier in the day. Vlasic held off Fleetwood's Sarah Crissman (second in 2:18.02) and Jawork (third in 2:18.64). In the 3000 meters, Stroudsburg's Michelle Joyce picked up the win in an open field. Joyce ran a PA#10 10:33.03 for first, while Eastern York's Maddie McLain took second in 10:34.66 and Chambersburg's Abby Yourkavitch was third in 10:37.28.

FIELD

Madison Langley-Walker got oh-so-close to her goal of 19 feet in the long jump, but she'll settle for a PR and improvement on her own PA#2 instead. The Upper Dublin junior jumped 18-11.5 to take the long jump win. State College's Taylor Givens was second with a jump of 18-5, good enough for a PA#4.

Liberty's Jochebed Arthur won a good battle in the girls' shot put. Arthur threw 39-6.25 for the win, while McCaskey's Aliyah Striver was second with a best throw of 39-2.75.

South Williamsport's Katie Jones has had a busy three day stretch. On Thursday, she won the pole vault at the Millrose Games. On Saturday, she was there at Lehigh to pick up a Carnival win. Jones cleared 13-1 for the win after opening at 12-0. That's her fourth time over 13 feet this season.

Coughlin's Madisyn Hawkins was second at 12-0. Hempfield's Carena Nottoli also cleared 12-0 to take third.

In a high jump competition that featured most of the top high jumpers in the state, it was the PA#1 Alexa Parks of Palisades that came out on top. Parks cleared 5-7 for the win (just off her indoor best of 5-8). Cheltenham's Brianna Smith was second, clearing 5-5, and Wyomissing's Tori Stembridge was the surprise of the event, placing third with an indoor PR of 5-3.

RELAYS

Southern Lehigh picked up a big win in the 4x800, running 9:43.07 to hunt down Friends' Central on the anchor leg. FCS had junior star Gabby Wilkinson run on the second leg of their relay. That's a PA#6 for Southern Lehigh.

In the 4x200, Nwogwugwu helped North Penn beat out Norristown in a great duel in the 4x200, which could be a good preview of what's to come at next week's MOCs and states.  North Penn clocked a 1:45.75 in the 4x2. Nwogwugwu returned in the 4x400 on the anchor leg. She took the baton, but Susquehanna Township's Brooks tried to run her down. Nwogwugwu was able to hold her off and North Penn won in 4:05.73.

Watch an interview with Nwogwugwu after the meet:

North Penn also won the DMR in a time of 12:35.21, making it wins in three out of the four relays on the day.
