PIAA States Preview: Boys' Throws

AAA Boys' Shot Put Preview

Without a doubt, the biggest favorite competing this weekend in Shippensburg will be Knoch's Jordan Geist. The state record holder and one of the all-time prep greats in the event nationally, Geist won by over 9 feet as a sophomore and more than 13 feet a year ago when his opening throw of 74 feet, 3.5 inches obliterated the former PIAA record by Ryan Whiting. The numbers to watch: 74-10.25 (Geist's current state record) and 77-0 (the national federation record by Michael Carter in 1979).

Chambersburg's Kelton Chastulik had a huge PR day at the District 3 meet at Shippensburg, topping 60 feet for the first time as a senior with a heave of 61-10.5. A non-qualifier last year in the shot, the senior looks primed for a solid showing this weekend and should be very familiar with Ship's shot facility.

Cathedral Prep's Cameron Landis was fifth a year ago in an event dominated by seniors and is the closest to joining the 60-foot club at 59-3.5, while Manheim Township's Ben Viau was 8th in 2016 and has the No. 5 throw this year at 58-1.5. Keith Dreese of Selinsgrove has hit 58-7 this year and is back at Shippensburg after placing 15th in 2016 as a sophomore, while Alex Murray of Hempfield is in the PIAA shot field for the first time and is No. 6 this year at 56-7.
