Team Breakdown: PIAA District 2 Girls

D2-AA Girls - Team Breakdown

Honesdale pulled off the upset in District 2 Class last fall, winning in dominating fashion over Scranton Prep and Dallas. Honesdale, propelled by strong finishes from Mackenzie LaMorte, Tedra Harrison, Dana Pratt, and Isabella Frigoletto, scored just 43 points to take the title by 30 points, putting four in the top 11 (three of which were freshmen). A week later, it placed seventh at the state meet.

Now Honesdale returns five of seven and will look for a repeat performance to last year. But Scranton Prep may have something to say about that. After the defeat at districts last year, Prep edged out Honesdale by six points at states to place sixth. Prep, led by Mia Bellucci, Abby Bowen and Anna Brier, brings back six from its 2016 varsity squad. Expect a great battle to the top of D2 between these two squads.

Dallas was third last season. It brings back five of seven, and should be in the mix again this season. The key is getting a breakthrough performer to step up and score some low points at the district meet if it wants to take down Honesdale or Prep for one of the two state qualifiers.

Western Wayne was a super young team last season, with a full varsity lineup comprised of either sophomores or freshmen. With Paige Barillo and Annie Skirpan leading the way, look for Western Wayne to make a play for the top two with more experience under its belt. Lake Lehman brings back its full top six from last fall. LL was fourth last season and, like Dallas, may need a frontrunner to emerge to get itself in state qualifying territory, but they are a strong squad.

Valley View and Holy Redeemer (with reigning individual district champ Lindsey Williams) will look to contend as well. Lots of teams have a good group of returners. It's all about putting it together on the right day, like Honesdale did last season.
