Veterans Shine, Newcomers Emerge To Start Indoor Season: Week 1 Recap

Girls

The pole vaulters took centerstage again this weekend. Mackenzie Horn of Manheim Township, who jumped a US#1 12-7 last week, showed her consistency clearing 12-6 to take another win. Loyalsock's Hailey Zurich jumped 12 feet for the first time indoors to take second and continue a hot start to her season. Hempfield's Carena Nottoli was third, getting over 11-6.

Lower Dauphin's Karina Long looked strong in the long jump with a leap of 18-7.5. That gave her the win and a new indoor PR. Long now sits at PA#1. State College's Taylor Givens was second to Long in the long, but won the triple jump with a leap of 35-9.

Reading's Keeley Suzenski was the surprise of the day, winning the shot put and taking the early state lead with a throw of 39-2.

Harrisburg's Jada Thompson got her season off to a good start, winning the 60 meters in 8.08 and the 200 meters in 27.07.

Padua Academy came up from Delaware and made a nice impact, sweeping the distance events. Judith McLaughlin won the 800 meters in 2:22.74 and Elizabeth Bader won the 1600 meters in 5:18.05. Lydia Olivere, fresh off an appearance at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland last week, won the 3000 meters in a US#1 time of 10:05.94.


Boys

Payton Morris of East Pennsboro continued to assert that he's the one to beat in the pole vault this year. The senior and UPenn recruit jumped 15-3, bettering his own PA#1 to take his second win in as many weeks.

Harrisburg's Jakari Lomax started his indoor season off well, leaping 43-10.25 in the triple jump to take overt the state's top spot. Milton Hershey's Jordan Winslow cleared 6-4 in the high jump to take the win, putting him at PA#2.

Evan Kreider of Cocalico ran 4:33.02 to win the 1600 meters, to set the early PA#1 over the distance.

The Wilson boys ran well in the 4x200 meter relay, clocking in at 1:33.86 to assume the state's top spot.
