Who To Watch For In Each District Meet

PIAA District 2 Championships

Who To Watch For: Gavin Darcy (Dunmore) & Marc Minichello (Wyoming Area)

Why? Two of the nation's 14 200+ foot javelin throwers hail from District 2 with Darcy and Minichello. Darcy, the reigning AA state champion, comes in with a season best of 204-09. Minichello tossed his season and career best of 202-02 to take second at the Penn Relays. Darcy will be repping AA, while Minichello is the one to watch in AAA.

What to expect: Darcy has been on the cusp of the 200 foot barrier in his last two meets, throwing 198 feet at both the Penn Relays and the Robert Spagna Championship. Look for him to try and take back the PA#1 spot, which he lost last week to Alexander Scheivert of Penn Manor. Minichello didn't compete in the postseason last year (with the exception of outdoor nationals), so he'll have a ton of motivation to come out and grab his first district title on Monday.

Others to watch for: CJ Anderson (AAA - Hurdles); Cyril Babcanec (AA - Sprints); Kyle Burke (AAA - Distance); Mitchell Forgash (AAA - 400/800); Ky'ron Harbin (AAA - Jumps); Andrew Healey (AA - Distance); Tyler Thomas (AA - Jumps); Trejon Turner (AAA - High Jump); Tyler Wirth (AAA - Distance)

Who To Watch For: Payden Montana (Berwick)

Why? Montana is the only girl in the country to have thrown over 50 feet this spring in the shot put. The Penn State recruit is in the midst of a dream senior season that included an indoor state title in the shot put. She threw 50 feet, 7 inches at the Penn Relays for the win and the nation's top throw. A few days after her win at Penn, Montana also threw a PA#1 and US#8 in the discus -- a toss of 164-11 -- at Lock Haven.

What to expect: Montana is just four inches off the PA outdoor state record in the shot put (it's 50-11 by Heather Colyer in 1997, though Colyer did throw 52-05.75 indoors) and four feet off the PA state record in the discus (that's 168-11 by Colleen Rosensteel in 1984), so it's not unreasonable for Montana to take a shot at those records. After districts is the state meet, where Montana will look to repeat as AAA shot put state champ and add a discus state title to her already jam-packed resume.

Others to watch: Victoria Atkinson (AAA - Pole Vault); Trina Barcarola (AA - Pole Vault); Ashley Blannard (AAA - Jumps); Katie Dammer (AAA - Distance); Danielle Heine (AAA - Pole Vault); Shelby Stackhouse (AAA - Jumps); Mikayla Marino (AA - Throws); Abby Norwillo (AAA - Pole Vault); Lexi Walsh (AA - Distance); Skyla Wilson (AA - Hurdles)
