PIAA States Preview: Girls' Jumps

AAA Girls' High Jump Preview

The AAA girls high jump seems very wide open for this weekend, with the title going to whomever has the best day at Ship.

The PA-AAA#1 is Taye Dairo of Central Dauphin. She jumped 5-08 to win the Mid-Penn title, then jumped 5-06 to win the District 3 title. She was 14th a year ago, but should improve that this year and compete for the win. The top seed coming is Brianna Smith of Cheltenham. The sophomore was fifth a year ago and also has a pair of seventh place medals from indoor states in the event. She cleared 5-07, a PR and PA-AAA#3, to win at District 1, so she's got some good momentum heading into states.

Plymouth Whitemarsh's Taylor O'Brien was second at states last year. Also a strong intermediate hurdler, O'Brien has a season best of 5-04, but a career best of 5-08. She'll be worth watching for. Easton Area's Kate Willshaw, Oakland Catholic's Jayla Ellis, and Central Mountain's Amelia McCloy have all jumped 5-06 this season (T-PA-AAA#4) and should be in the mix, among many others, in this deep event.
