Getting to Know: Track & Field's Leah Schubel and Corinne Lariviere

Class: Freshman

Major:
    Corinne Lariviere (CL) - Chemistry
Leah Schubel (LS) - Business and Economics

When did you start in Track and Field (what age) and why:
CL - 7th Grade, because I didn't want to play spring soccer and because I loved cross-country so much.
LS - I started running track in seventh grade in middle school; I started running road races when I was four years old. I always have loved running and seventh grade was the first year I was actually on a track team which is the earliest my school would allow.

Why VMI:
CL - I wanted to go to a school where I wouldn't have to worry about the things most college students have to deal with, like cheating.  I'll always be able to proudly say that I went to VMI, where I was challenged emotionally, physically, and mentally every day.
LS - At first I thought, “VMI? Never!” But then after reading the brochures and deciding to take a visit, I really wanted to do something unique and challenge myself.

Favorite VMI memory:
CL - Well, Hell Week was pretty sweet…maybe not!  I think the best time I've had here has been away from school on cross country trips.  The Blue Ridge Relay in September was definitely the best weekend I've had while here.
LS - N/A (not until we breakout… IF we breakout)

Least favorite VMI memory:
CL - Oh man, it seems like I'm always doing dumb things to get myself in trouble.  I think the worst thing though was being sick for so long, and not being able to race or even practice for a while.
LS - Matriculation day… I had no idea what I was getting myself into!

Goals for the upcoming season:
CL - I've never run a 5K on a track, so I would love to try that out.  I also want to break all of my old PR's from high school, but most importantly, I want our team to succeed.  We should have some pretty raw distance relays too!
LS - PR's in my events, compete in the distance medley relay (and be competitive in it), for the team to win Conference.

Favorite movie/book and why:
CL - I could watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off for weeks straight and not get sick of it, because it keeps me laughing throughout the movie.
    LS - N/A

When you have an hour of free time, you like to...:
CL - Run or just go on a walk - anything outside.
LS - I have no free time here. If I did, I would love to go biking here, there are so many sites that I would love to go see!

What sporting venue would you most like to visit?
CL - I would love to go to any Olympic venue - during the winter or summer Olympics.
LS - I want to go see the Olympic Trials at Haywood Field in Oregon.

When surfing the Internet, what web site do you visit most frequently?
CL - Facebook … I guess I'm kind of addicted.
    LS - Google, dearabby.com, facebook.

Favorite sport to watch (other than T&F):
CL - Baseball … i.e. The Boston Red Sox.
    LS - Golf

If someone would look at the songs I have, on my IPOD or computer, I'd be embarrassed for them to see I have this song:
CL: The Tigger theme song - it's perfect for just making anyone laugh in any situation though.
LS: Songs from Disney's "Aladdin" and "Mulan".

If you could eat dinner with three other people, living or not, who would they be and why?
CL: I never got to meet my Aunt Ruth, so I would definitely choose her first, but the second two people would be people who would make me laugh - they wouldn't even have to be celebrities, just any two really happy and funny people would be perfect.
LS: George Washington, Donald Trump, and Condoleezza Rice.
