Keydet Women Dominate VMI Relays

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's cross country team got its 2010 season off to a strong start, sweeping the top two positions en route to a team win at Friday's VMI Cross Country Relays, held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington.

Defending Big South Cross Country Champion Hannah Granger and freshman Hannah Best were credited with the team win, as Granger crossed the line in a virtual dead heat with sophomore Jenna Moye. Moye and partner Leah Schubel were looking for their second consecutive win in the event, but Granger's top overall time (18:30, including an 8:54 opening leg) was too much to overcome. The Keydets also had the fourth-place team, comprised of freshmen Nicole Augins and Rebecca Sweeney.

In the team score, VMI captured the win easily. The top two teams were scored, leading to the Keydets' three points winning and Radford tying Washington & Lee for second (14 pts.). Longwood and Concord rounded out the competitors with 15 points each.

“I thought we did a great job for not running everyone,” said VMI head coach Paul Spangler. “I was particularly happy with our freshmen, most notably Rebecca Sweeney and Hannah Best, who both did a great job. Hannah looked great today, and Leah Schubel was solid as well. I'm very excited to see what we are capable of when our team is at one hundred percent.”

The race was comprised of four 1.5 mile legs, with each woman running one circuit before relaying to her partner, and so on. Schubel took the race out quickly, posting a 9:10 opening leg and leaving Granger with an 18-second deficit to overcome. The senior did that with ease, passing Moye and going on to an 11-second advantage. Moye's 9:25 effort was solid, the seventh-best leg of the day, but Granger's 8:54 clocking was the day's best by some 16 seconds.

After Schubel and Best had their second legs, Granger and Moye appeared to run together for much of the final leg, crossing the finish line in a virtual tie for the win.

As mentioned above, Granger had the top individual time, finishing in 18:30. Schubel was at 18:32, and in one of the bigger surprises of the day, Sweeney of VMI was third, thanks to a time of 18:42. Moye (19:12) and Best (19:14) were sixth and seventh, while Augins came home in 20th place overall (20:21).

VMI women's cross country will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 as the Keydets travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take part in the Big South Preview meet, which will be hosted by Radford.
