We have now reached the final month of the season, meaning it's time for big meets and warm weather.
This past weekend was track and field's biggest annual spectacle, the Penn Relay Carnival. Many schools recorded great
relay performances, but despite that, none of the state leaders in the 4x100, the 4x400, and 4x800 were overtaken.
Strath Haven improved their state leading time in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:15.92 to record PA's best finish
in the Championship of America. Overall, nine of the top ten 4x800 meter relay times came from the meet. Downingtown East
(PA#2 9:19.07) and West Chester Henderson (PA#3 9:20.97) also made the COA final. Seven teams overall are under 9:25 this
season. Central Dauphin East held on to their state lead in the 4x100, but Swenson (PA#2 47.94) and Pennridge (PA#3 47.95)
separated themselves from the rest of the state and closed the gap on the leaders. Pennsbury held on to their 4x400 lead,
but Coatesville (PA#2 3:53.00) and Central Bucks West (PA#3 3:53.20) closed the gap. The three are the only teams under
3:55 this season.
In the open events, Homer Center's Angel Piccirillo's bid for a 3rd straight Penn Relays watch ended in a silver medal
performance of 4:47.49, putting her back at the top of the state list for mile/1600. Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic
ran 4:53.71 for 5th and moved up to PA#3. Larisa Debich of Hempfield (7) won the pole vault at Penn, and then improved on
her mark two days later at Westmoreland County to clear a lifetime best of 12-9! Christine Streissel of Tamaqua won the
javelin, with Sarah Firestone of Mercersburg moved to PA#4 in the javelin with her 3rd place finish of 144-10. Carter Green
of North Schuylkill finished 7th in the discus with a PA#3 mark of 136-3. To wrap up the Penn Relays action, Taylor Morgan
of Upper Dublin was the top American finisher in the high jump with her 3rd place and state leading clearance of 5-8.
Away from Penn, we had more state leaders. Emma Keenan of Gwynedd Mercy made her spring debut in the 800 meter run at a
windy Lady Hatter Classic and jumped straight to PA#1 with a winning time of 2:13.46. Greta Lindsley of Penn Manor moved up
to PA#2 at Millersville with a time of 2:14.60. Margo and Shannon Malone went 1-2 at the Mars Invitational 1600, and moved
up to PA#4 and PA#5. Courtney Smith of Unionville became the 6th girl to crack 11 minutes in the 3200 meter run in front of
her home crowd (PA#4 10:58.42). The long jump produced a new top two, as Maddile Holmberg of Hempfield (7) (PA#1 18-11) and
Alonta Pitts of Valley (PA#2 18-9.25) went 1-2 at the Westmoreland County meet. The top eight in the long jump are all at
18 feet or longer. Ramonia Benitez of Pocono Mountain West moved up to PA#2 in the triple jump with an ASD Invite winning
mark of 38-10.75. Emily Lelis of Springdale ran a PA#3 time of 14.78 in the 100 meter hurdles at the Mars Invitational.
Taylor Williams took both PA#1 spots in the 100 (11.93) and 200 meter dashes (24.34) down at Morgan State.
