PA Salute To Seniors: Emma Mahony - Villa Joseph Marie

What was your most memorable race/competition?
My most memorable competition was freshman year when our 4x8 placed 2nd at States. It was my first track State meet and I was anchor leg. I really didn't know what was going on at the time, I just took the baton and ran. Looking back it was really exciting, especially because I was so oblivious,

Where did you face your biggest competition?
I saw the most competition when it came to the bigger meets such as Foot Locker Northeast and New Balance Indoors. Pennsylvania has such great runners, but then you are with people from all different states who are just as good if not better.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?
Probably Junior Year when I placed 4th in Cross Country at States. That was a big deal because it was my first cross country medal at states and I was really happy with how I raced.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your athletic career in high school?
I would try to remember that it's supposed to be just as fun as it is work. I think I sometimes put too much pressure on myself in the sport and it's not supposed to be that way! I would have also tried different races and events.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
I had many different injuries throughout high school, but I think overcoming the fact that every race and season is different was the hardest part. I had a good Junior year fall and winter and by spring I think I was burnt out and that was hard to accept because I wanted to perform at the same level I had been, but it just wasn't there.

What will you miss the most?
I will miss my team the most! They are the most fun group of people I have ever met and so supportive. I will also miss all the cross country meets and the friendly rivalry amongst competitors throughout the state.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?
Don't get too worked up over the sport. Remember it is supposed to be fun and the more you enjoy yourself in the process the better you will do. If it is causing you stress, then you need to make a change!

How have your coaches influenced your performances and your life goals overall?
My coaches taught me a lot about being confident with my training an ability and to focus on one race at a time.

What are your college plans?
I will be attending The College of William and Mary in the Fall and will be running Cross Country and Track!
