Ravaughn Dillard has transferred out of PA, but many talented boys return in the TJ

Boys' Triple Jump Preseason Rankings By Classification: AAA | AA | Independent

The state's top triple jumper from last year will not return to go for his third straight AAA state crown and the door is open for a new state champ. Ravaughn Dillard, formerly of Gettsysburg, transferred to North Hagerstown in Maryland. Dillard has previously won two triple jump state titles.

The AA champ from 2016 is back, though. New Brighton's Anthony Milliner put down a huge PR of 48-5.5 at states in some great jumping conditions. Milliner went undefeated last season through states and the senior will be looking for a repeat performance this season. A lot of eyes will be on him in AA this year.

Looking to challenge Milliner will be Washington's Isaiah Robinson. Robinson sees a lot of Milliner in the WPIAL. He was second to the state champ at districts and then he placed third in the event at states. His season best was 46-9. Motivation's Nafese Mack was fourth at states in AA last year. His best of 45-0.5 came at states last season and he'll be looking for a similar performance.

Palisades' Matt Siley (sixth), Union Area's James Thomas (seventh), Schuylkill Valley's Dustin Brown (eighth) are the other returning medalists in AA from 2016. Northern Bedford's Gavin Gilbert and Minersville Area's Kei'dre Taylor missed out on medals last spring, but should be contenders this season after strong jumps in 2016.

In AAA, the battle for the state crown will be a good one. Dillard, a strong and athletic multi-sport athlete , is gone, but there are no shortage of boys that can chase the 48 foot and possibly even 49 foot marks. One at the top of that list is Souderton's Shamar Jenkins. Jenkins was a breakthrough performer last season. He ended up fifth at states in AAA and posted a best jump of 47-11 at his league championship. This indoor, he took his jumping to a new level. Jenkins jumped 48-4.25 at indoor states to take the state title. He could be looking at an even bigger improvement into this spring.

A win at states will be no "gimme" for Jenkins, though. Milton Hershey's Treyvon Ferguson will be tough to beat. Ferguson was sixth at states last season and took third at indoor states. He returns with a best jump of 47-9.5 from last season. But it's Pocono Mountain West's Isaiah Wiggins who is the top returner from states last year. Wiggins jumped his season best of 47-6.75 at Ship last spring to take fourth overall. Can he move up to the top spot this spring?

Dayo Abeeb (Strath Haven) / Photo by Ethan Rissell

Strath Haven's Dayo Abeeb had a tremendous indoor season this winter. Abeeb broke through with some big jumps, including a best of 47-6.75 at indoor states to take second to Jenkins. Look for Abeeb to continue to improve into the spring.

Stroudsburg's Shaquille Mitchell was ninth last season, just missing a medal in AAA. He had a strong indoor season, so we'll be looking for a motivated Mitchell to make a big impact this season. Pleasant Valley's Michael Mitchell jumped 46-1.5 mid-season last year, but his season ended prematurely after his league meet. Look for Mitchell to be a factor as well.

Imhotep shifts to AAA this season, which means Akeem Cooper, a state medalist in AA last season, will compete against a new crop of athletes. Cooper took fifth in AA and jumped a best of 44-7, but he's improved a lot since then. He took fourth at indoor states and then jumped a PR of 46-4.25 at indoor nationals to place third in the "Emerging Elite" section.

Upper Dublin's Brian Kaufmann, State College's Brandon Clark, Altoona Area's Daiquain Watson, and Penn Charter's Akeem Blake are others that earned medals at indoor states. Blake is the top independent schools' returner to watch for. Williamsport's Stan Scott and Scranton's Keyron Harbin are other AAA boys that could make an impact this spring.

DeShawn Millington (Carlisle) / Photo by Bill Ledgett

It's also worth keeping an eye on DeShawn Millington, a senior basketball standout from Carlisle. Millington won a AAA state title as a freshman in 2014 and took second as a sophomore. He has a lifetime best of 49-6.25. He told PennLive's Timothy Johnson that he will compete in the triple this spring, and if he does, he could be the favorite to win.

Watch an interview with Milliner after winning the AA state title last year and check out the top 500 returnees in the boys' triple jump this season below:
