Particularly in northwestern PA, the weather has not been kind to start the outdoor season. Villa Maria and Erie Cathedral Prep coach Mike Palmer talked with us about the difficulties of training in the cold and snowy weather.

Snow and Erie go together like peanut butter and jelly, and macaroni and cheese. You cannot think of one without the other. And the winter/spring of 2017-18 has been one for the record books for Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city. Since more than 5 feet of lake-effect snow rolled off Lake Erie during the holidays, Erie has been headed toward a potential 200 inches of the white stuff for the season and the all-time record for a major U.S. city. Almost four months after that brutal storm, high school athletes and coaches have been doing the best they can to practice and hopefully compete as conditions have not been springlike at all. Two of western Pennsylvania’s top programs had their season debut at Friday’s Butler Invitational as invitationals and dual meets have been canceled or postponed because of snow or cold conditions. Mike Palmer, head coach of Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria, talked to PTXC about his teams’ weather misfortunes in 2018.
