If it wasn\'t for the remarkable Mile-3000 double by Allentown Central Catholic\'s Frances Koons with one meet record and a near-miss in the other, the two individual and two relay state championships by West Catholic\'s Nicole Leach would have stood alone as the best of the meet. But Koons got the nod as Female Athlete of the Meet, while Leach got her four titles and the state team crown. Koons moves on to Villanova (yes, she has made a verbal commitment), while Leach returns to chase state records and probably much more in her senior year. Not to be lost in this is Latavia Thomas\' US #1 800 of 2:08.47, breaking 24-year-old record of Upper Dublin\'s Kim Gallagher, 2:09.5h. More in the meet summary.
Don called in some details on his way home from the meet. Papay and Radamacher share Boys Athlete of the Meet and Koons is Girls Athlete of the Meet. West Catholic takes Girls Team Title while Bensalem won Boys.
The state\'s best (at least most of them) are in State College for the 30th Annual PTFCA Indoor State Championships on the lightning-fast banked Mondo track that will help any athlete perform to their best. There are tons of great match-ups and individual performances to watch, but the key ones include:
The state cut-offs for qualifying for the PTFCA State Indoor Championships 2/28 at Penn State. Winners at the two Philly-area Meets of Champs, and the TSTCA Champs are auto qualifiers.
According to Archbishop Carroll Head Coach Phil Reilly, distance ace Mike Tilger will concentrate on the Mile and the 4x800 at the PTFCA State Indoor Championships this coming Saturday at Penn State University. Following their top US 7:57.11 4x800 on 2/21at the Hall of Fame Classic in NY, Carroll is now easily one of the favorites for the 4x800 championship. Others include the PCL\'s Bonner, LaSalle and O\'Hara, plus North Penn and Warwick. Tilger holds the top 3000-3200-2 mile time in the state of 9:26.89 (2 miles). Tilger ran a PA #3 4:21.04 at PCLs on 2/15. With his 1:55-point closing anchor on the 4x800 2/21, that puts Tilger in what should be a feature race against the state\'s two sub-4:13 guys, Steve Hallinan, O\'Hara, 4:12.72, and Chris Spooner, Lewisburg, 4:12.98. Hallinan is coming back from a brief break because of a foot injury, but rebounded to a 4:18 split on 2/21 in the DMR. The state indoor record is 4:11.57, held by North Penn\'s Blair Mancini, and was set in 1981.
The standards for acceptance into the PTFCA Indoor State Championships are set each year by performance cutoffs for that season. The past two year\'s standards are linked in this story.
