It was a great 2011-2012 in both cross country and track across the Keystone State. Many of our seniors will soon be on their way to start their college careers both athletically and academically... so we wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature.
For years, we have been looking for a way to both honor retired coaches, and to share some of their knowledge and stories of the sport. Jay Williams ran for Villanova under Jumbo Elliott, and coached for a year in New Jersey before his 34-year career at Haverford. There are times to stick it out and work to turn around a less-than-satisfying situation. And then there are times you should just cut your losses and move on.
In a meet delayed because of a nasty wet weekend earlier in April, teams chose to offer opportunities to lots of athletes to participate - the whole point of relays. But a lot of \"A\" teams also got in some work.

Former PA XC AAA state champs Dave Mock (Westmont Hilltop) and Frances Koons (Allentown Central Catholic) finished with the elite of the USATF XC juniors. Mock captured 8th in 25:59.8 for the 8km Junior Men\'s race, while Koons was 13th in the Junior Women\'s 6km race at the USATF Cross Country Championships, running 22:58. Former Haverford runner and Olympian Shayne Culpepper was 2nd in the Open Women\'s 4km in 13:27.0, while former Great Valley star Mark Stallings was 26th in the Open Men\'s 12km race in 39:15.7.
Karen Shump is making quite an impact among the state\'s shot putters, and with a throw of 40-08, she\'s now US#3. Strath Haven\'s Lisa Vienneau is now US#7 in the mile. Haverford SR Julia Somers set a big PR in the 3000. Penn Wood\'s Simone Carter was a double champ. The 800 was quick, as well...
