Geoghegan Leads Dartmouth Men to Second at 2013 Paul Short

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Will Geoghegan's third-place individual finish helped the Dartmouth men's cross country team claim second in the standings Saturday at the 2013 Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh.

In the first of numerous races scheduled for throughout the day, the Big Green and 47 other teams took to the 8K course as part of the Men's Gold Race. Indiana and its 89 team points were the lone program to best Dartmouth in the standings as the Big Green earned 106 points.

The second-place team finish at Paul Short was the best ever in program history.

Geoghegan, who finished fifth at the same meet last year, ran a 23:46 on Saturday to earn the three points for the Green and White. The senior from Maine is fresh off a first-place collegiate showing in the season-opening Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 14.

The hopes of the coaching staff heading into the meet were to have two harriers finish in the top-10, a goal that came to fruition on Saturday morning with senior John Bleday's seventh-place showing in 24:05.

A third member of the senior class was the next Dartmouth runner to finish, as Henry Sterling was 25th in 24:33.

Junior Silas Talbot was 28th overall in 24:38, while Curtis King's 43rd-place finish in 24:46 rounded out the scoring for the Big Green, giving the team 106 points.

That scoring total helped Dartmouth beat out Georgetown (110), Harvard (167) and Iowa State (188), the three teams that comprised the rest of the top-five. Harvard's James Leakos was the men's top individual finisher, claiming the win in 23:13.

Yale (7th), Penn (11th), Brown (21st) and Cornell (31st) all represented the Ivy League at the annual meet of some of the nation's top teams, but were all bested by a strong and deep Dartmouth squad.

Now, several members of the team will turn their attention to next Saturday's New England Championship meet in Boston.
