Class AA Boys: Tunkhannock hangs on against defending champions, Deluca caps off big 2013 season

The AA team title race was the closest of the six races at the 2013 edition of the state championships. Defending champions Pottsgrove won a big race last week in successfully defending their district title over a game Holy Ghost Prep. Meanwhile, Tunkhannock had won the district 2 championship and were picked by some PTXC voters to be the numebr 1 AA boys team in the state. When the most consistent teams competes against a team on a hot streak, it could lead to a dramatic finish.

Tunkhannock were in control for most of the meet, only for Pottsgrove to make a comeback in the final mile plus of the race. Pottsgrove kept close with Tunkhannock's top three and had the better top four. But Tunkhannock had the better number five by seven points and that was enough to edge the team title from the defending champions 101-105. Both had spreads of under one minute to keep the meet close. South Fayette finished 3rd with 122 points Joncarlo Patton finishing 20th.

Dominic Deluca of Dallas was the big favorite coming into the AA final and the PTXC and district 2 champions made it look easy at the difficult Hershey state course. He pushed through the first mile in a quick 4:39 to put a seven second cushion on him and the rest of the field. He would cruise to victory and earn his first state title with a time of 16:21 to win by 15 seconds over Dominic Hockenbury of Lake-Lehman. William Kachman of Bedford finished 3rd in 16:38.
