Saturday @ Penn: Saturday @ Penn: Hatboro Horsham's Joe Berry jumps 16-03.25 to set a Penn Relays record in the high school pole vault. Justin Germani of Daniel Boone takes 2nd, clearing 15-5. Two Council Rock South vaulters, Max Chichkin (14-9)and Brian Smith (14-03.25), are 7th and 8th, respectively. The tradition that is the 4x800 at North Penn High School added another chapter as the team of three juniors and a sophomore nailed down the top American spot behind three Jamaican teams, running 7:50.77 (Steve Franks (1:57.0), Brian Quintrell (2:00.9), Justin Bookheimer (1:56.6), Zack Montijo (1:56.3). In the 400 hurdles, Jarrett Eaton of Abington is 3rd, going 53.26. In the long jump, Reuben Ames, Glen Mills, goes 20-10.75 for 10th. Wissahickon's Folarin Ijelu is 7th in the triple jump at 46-05.25. Joe Kovacs, Bethlehem Central Catholic, is 4th in the discus with a throw of 169-02. Coughlines Erik Kemmerer (159-06) is 9th and Germantown Academy's Alex Holcombe is 10th with a throw of 154-00. In the high jump, James Pittenger of William Tennent is 3rd, clearing a season best of 6-06.75, while Kyriq Williams of Phoenixville was 4th, clearing 6-05. In the girls Tri-State 4x100, Harrisburg took 2nd in 48.60. The Altoona boys took 2nd in the Large Schools 4x100 in 42.63. In the Philadelphia Area 4x400's, the Neshaminy boys were 3rd in 3:21.05 and Coatesville took 4th in 3:23.41. The Methacton girls took 2nd in 3:54.27, with Engineering & Science, Council Rock North, Strath Haven, Chester and North Penn all under 4 minutes in the race. In other Friday PA action, the small school boys' 4x800's got off on time, but the large school races were delayed by 1.5 hours, followed by another half hour delay. The large school boys follwed the first rain delay and North Penn was the only PA team to advance to the COA, running the 8th best time in 7:59.60. Wissahickon's Nick Crits had the 9th best split, going 1:56.8. In the girls 4x800 COA, Gwynedd-Mercy was 10th, running 9:24.17. They had gone 9:19.03 to advance to the race. In the boys' javelin, Brian Moore of LaSalle College nearly pulled it out on the last throw of 208-09, finishing second to an athlete from British Columbia (209-02). Whitehall's Andrew Fahringer was 4th with a throw of 194-08. Greenwood's Jordan Myers was 7th (185-04). Wayne Crawford (58-05.75) of Chestnut Hil Academy, Tom Cicoli (57-05) of Archbishop Carroll, and Garrett Larkin (57-02) of North Allegheny were 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the shot put. PA got a 5th and 6th in the girls' discus as Coatesville's Kaleena Gray threw 128-06 and North Allegheny's Jade Hambrick threw 123-03. In the girls' 4x100 Small Schools race, Swenson took 6th in 48.96 and Germantown Academy was 7th in 49.25. In the final two high school races of the night, and following the dramatic DMR win by Coatesville, Unionville's Paul Springer was in good position approaching the end of the third lap, but faded to 5th until a great kick over the final 70 meters pulled him into 2nd with a 4:10.98. In the boys' 3000, the huge pack was content to let Boyertown's Jason Weller lead for much of the race. After eventual winner Brian Long of Kentucky broke the race open, Weller would hold on for 4th in 8:29.82. Rob Speare of Strath Haven pulled into 5th in 8:32.17.

Thursday @ Penn: In the first high school event of the day, Mechacton junior Ryann Krais won the 400 HURDLES over a strong field in a PR of 58.93. Krais didn't get a great start according the her coach Rob Ronzano, but she recovered quickly. By the time she had 15-stepped her way between hurdles and arrived at the 200 mark she had the lead. Coming off the 10th and final hurdles, she was side-by-side with the top seed, Shana-Gaye Tracey of Manchester, Jamaica. Tracey had gone sub-58 earlier this season, but with Krais pressing her over the entire race, clipped the last hurdle and stumbled. Krais was clear. Tracey recovered to finish 2nd in 59.49. Krais said the key was her ability to just focus on her race and not to worry about anyone else. Easier said than done with the depth of this year's field. "At 200 when I heard 'Ryann Krais is in the lead' I said 'alright, let's keep this'." Coach Ronzano said he was busy watching Krais the whole way to see what can be improved, but that when she rounded the final turn in with the favorite, he immediately thought that she would pull it out. "She has a drive. It it's a close race, you don't want to be running against her." Krais says she got an extra boost from the crowd, but that she was thinking about Penn Relays record-holder Nicole Leach, a West Catholic grad now competing at UCLA. "I thought about her before the race. And as I was coming down the stretch, I thought 'if Nicole can do it, I can do it'." One of the first to congratulate Krais after her race was Nicole dad, Al. "I didn't know that was him. That's quite an honor. That's really cool." Ronzano was also impressed by Krais' performance. "This one nearly brought me to tears."
Karlee McQuillen came into her first Penn Relays as the top seed in the JAVELIN. But the 2nd seed, defending champ Tanesha Blair of Holmwood Technical, Jamaica, was on her mind. McQuillen was also coming off what she considered a sub-par performance the week prior at Ship. "I was in a slump. I don't know what was wrong, but all week I worked on my steps, getting back into rhythm, and it paid off. McQuillen led after the her flight, but Blair was lurking in second. Her best throw of the flight had been on her second effort, and that's the one she nailed in the finals, a 42.60m or 151-07. The mark was good enough to give her a Penn Relays championships on her first and only try in high school. The South Florida-bound senior remains optimistic about the rest of her season. "Last year at this time, I was throwing in the 140's, so we're about ten feet ahead of schedule." McQuillen has the PA-best ever throw of 162-04 from the state championships in 2006. She aiming further, and Penn may just be the mid-season confidence boost she needs to get there. Carlisle's Kacey James was 5th with a throw of 135-11 and Elisha Jones, Eisenhower, was 6th at 132-05.
Easton's Abby Schaffer has spent years watching as the Regan sisters dominated the state (and their school) in the POLE VAULT, winning state champs and Penn Relays titles. Schaffer misses Courtney and Lindsey, but is adjusting nicely to being the one of the best in the state and beyond – especially since the weather is turning nicer. "I'm just trying to continue what she was doing." Schaffer cleared a PR a little over 12-4.50, and his hoping for bigger heights this season. "My coaches have me lifting so I can get on bigger poles and not be afraid. I just want to go up."
Karen Shump of Penncrest really wanted to get her first 50' foot SHOT PUT at the Penn Relays. She was visibly disappointed with her 2nd place. But her prelims throw of 49-00.75 was only the second time she has ever gone north of 49'. "I have a lot of things to fix, as usual, but I am more confident that I was last year at this time. My technique has improved because I'm not pitching (softball) any more." Shump will try to three-peat in AAA states, and then head to North Carolina for Nike Outdoor Nationals and later in June to Indianapolis for the USATF Junior Nationals. Alanna Owens of Rustin was 8th at 42-06.
The 3000 METER RUN was a loaded field. But armed with the confidence of a Foot Locker all-American, and a sister-enhanced training program that has made her even stronger and faster than a year ago, Central Cambria's Carly Seymour was ready for the challenge. She started near the front, but chose not to join defending champ Ashley Higginson of Colts Neck and two other athletes at the front. "I wanted to run my race." But with four laps left, a few athletes behind Seymour pushed past her. Seymour went with them. She stayed there from fifth to sixth until the final 400, when the real surge began. "That last 400 was tough. I have to work on my kick. I could tell those girls waited for the last 400 and I just didn't have enough left." She finished 7th in 9:57.65. Seymour will just have to add more of the 400 workouts she has begun with her younger, faster "from 400 down" sister, Kelsey. Seymour will race four events on Saturday in Lock Haven, and hopes to notch her first sub-5:00 1600. She'll probably race both distance events at states. "Not running both of them wouldn't be wimping out, but just not putting my entire heart and soul into it, and I just love both races and I just think I should go for both."
Although the entire stadium thought that Samantha McMillan came the whole way from Utah to compete in the MILE, a few knew that it was a homecoming of sorts. McMillan was 2nd in the 2005 PIAA State AAA Cross Country Champs as a sophomore. That summer, she moved with her family to Salt Lake City. On Thursday, she returned to PA and used a devastating kick to pull out a come from behind win in the mile, going 4:50.31.
In the Distance Medley Relay, Henderson was the top PA finisher, going 12:10.22 for 9th. In the 4x800, Gwynedd-Mercy, running in one of the two Small School qualifier races, was the only PA team to make the Championship of America Friday at 12:30. They ran 9:19.03. Archbishop Carroll missed by just three seconds. In the 4x400's, Easton ran 3:51.77, the fastest by a PA team. Anchor Chanelle Price ran the fastest split on the day, a 53.7 leg. Methacton won their heat in 3:55.85, anchored by Ryann Krais in 14th fastest split of the day, a 55.6 (That's after her 58.93 400 hurdles, of course. Krais also ran on their 50.68 4x100. She was named the female high school athlete of the day. No PA teams qualified for the COA in the 4x100 or 4x400. Methacton, Chester, North Penn, Central Bucks West, Strath Haven, Engineering & Science, Norristown, Council Rock South, St. Hubert, Gwynedd Mercy and Downingtown West qualified for the Philly area 4x400. Germantown Academy, Swenson, Harrisburg, Penn Charter, Girls High (Philly) and Upper Darby qualified for the Tri-State 4x100. Germantown Academy, Swenson and Penn Charter will compete in the 4x100 Small Schools Championship. Altoona sophomore Bethany Lender took 7th in the triple jump with a 37-09.25 leap. Reading's Jazmin Hunt tied for 10th in the high jump, clearing 5-03. Upper Darby's Bintou Dibba was 11th in the long jump, going 17-10.75.

Shippensburg-bound Rebekah Newhart of Hughesville cleared 5-05 to win the high jump to go with 2nd in the long and triple jumps and the 100 hurdles. Central Mountain's Kristin Brandt got off a big triple jump, going 37-02.75. Montoursville's Gary Bush ran 49.06 to easily win the 400. Lewisburg ran 3:28.09 to capture the 4x400.

Indian Valley's Matt Gray won three events, the 300 hurdles in 41.0, the 110 hurdles in 15.3 and the 400 in 52.2. The other triple winner included his teammate Brooke Matthews, who took the 400 in 1:01.5, the 100 in 13.0 and the 200 in 26.8. Penns Valley's Sarah Moniminy ran 2:23.2 and 5:23.2 for the distance double. In the field, Missy Clouser of Bellefont threw the discus 116-11 and the shot put 34-09.

Glen Mills senior Thomas Stubbs had a strong javelin throw, going 181-2. Methacton's Jarett Gordon took the 100 in 10.9 and the 200 in 22.3. Tennent's Alli Diepeveen went 57.4 in the 400. Rhian Jones of Haverford Township took 2nd in 58.1 and added a quick 45.5 win in the 300 hurdles.

There was a quick 400 by Lower Dauphin's Craig Espenshade with his 49.32. Conestoga Valley's Vince McNally went 4:17.21 for 1600. The Penn Relays Carnival
Central Cambria junior Carly Seymour is the 5th seed in a loaded girls' 3000 field for the 2007 Penn Relays Carnival. But she is just one of many top five PA seeds in the big events which dominate the high school action on Thursday and Friday. In fact, there are eight boys' events and five girls' events where Pennsylvania individuals are among the favorites for a Championship of America (and the Penn Relays watch, of course.). PennTrackXC.com contibutor Kim Jaick Soden caught up with Seymour earlier this week, and says that a new training parnter has helped her prepare for the big stage that is Franklin Field.
Boyertown's Jason Weller is the top seed in the 3000, while Unionville's Paul Springer is the 3rd seed in the mile.
GIRLS: Joining Seymour among event favorites is Ryann Krais, Methacton, in the 400 hurdles, the first high school event kicking off Thursday action. Although Krais is the 7th seed, don't be surprised that she places well above that. Three PA girls are #2, #3 and #5 seeds in the pole vault – Beki Finn, Liberty; Stephanie McDougal, North Penn; and Abbi Schaffer, Easton. Archbishop Ryan's Nohjay Nimpson is the 4th seed in the long jump. Penncrest junior Karen Shump faces off against some great competiton as 2nd seed in the shot put. 2005 Penn Relays javelin champion Elisha Jones of Eisenhower is the 4th seed this year. She was 3rd in 2006. PA all-time best record-holder Karlee McQuillen of Westmont-Hilltop is the top seed. In the DMR, Henderson, Radnor and Archbishop Prendergast go against a very deep field. The Small School Girls 4x800 features Saint Basil and Gwynedd-Mercy as top five seeds. There are eight PA teams in the Small School 4x800. In Large School Girls, Downingtown East is the top PA seed of eight in the races.
BOYS: Jason Weller of Boyertown is the top seed in the boys' 3000. The mile will feature 3rd seed Paul Springer of Unionville. The javelin is always PA territory, and this year is no exception. Taking three of the top four seeds are Central Dauphin sophomore Justin Shirk (2nd) (in PTXC photo at the 4/7 Bruce Dallas Invitational), Whitehall's Andrew Fahringer, and LaSalle's Brian Moore. In the shot put, Wayne Crawford of Chestnut Hill Academy is the 1st seed. William Tennent's James Pittenger is seeded 3rd in the high jump. Also a 3rd seed is Joe Kovacs of Bethlehem Catholic, competing in the discus. . The 5th seed in the pole vault is Hatboro-Horsham's Joe Berry. Jermaine Lowery of West Catholic is the top PA seed in the 400 hurdles, at 6th. In the DMR. Coatesville and Henderson are the top two PA seeds. They will be joined by Germantown Friends and Upper Dublin. In the Small Schools 4x800, Hershey is the top seed of five PA teams. And in the Large Schools 4x800, perennial 4x800 power North Penn is seeded fourth. There are five additional PA teams in the mix in the Large Schools races.
