By Tom LaBuff

The torrid Western Pennsylvania weather broke just in time for the 19th running of the Gateway Cross Country Invitational Championships, and runners for the first time this season enjoyed 60's temperatures as they battled over the hills and valleys of Boyce Park’s new Pavilion 5K course. In the women’s varsity race, the depth of the quality individuals in the field was demonstrated by the 9th place finish of defending champion Kristy Domis of Baldwin. Chelsea Sumney of Trinity won individual honors, pulling away from Rachel Humphrey of Fox Chapel over the last mile of the challenging course. In the team competition, Norwin served notice that they intend to challenge for the WPIAL title, defending their 2006 title by placing four girls in the top 12 in a decisive victory over a strong Fox Chapel team. In the men’s varsity race, the team competition was especially tight. The first four teams were separated by a meager ten points. Norwin recaptured the title it held in 2005 with 71 points, edging Baldwin (73), West Allegheny (76), and host Gateway (81). In the individual competition, David Adley of Baldwin pulled away from D J Krystek of Gateway & teammate T J Hobart over the last mile to win the race.
