PIAA District 3 Cross Country Champs may move to Wednesday to build in rain date

PIAA District 3 Cross Country Chairman Hal Griffiths says that there may be some changes in the the timing of the 2008 District 3 cross country championships.

The meet has met with postponements during its first two years at the new PIAA State Championships course at Hershey Parkview.

In 2006, the meet was postponed from its scheduled Saturday to the Monday before the state meet. To prevent a repeat of that for athletes and teams, when this year's meet needed to be postponed, it was moved to the following day. Neither solution was satisfactory to the District 3 Cross Country Steering Committee, which voted earlier this week to recommend a Wednesday date to the full District 3 committee when they meet in December.

The recommendation was a consensus of the coaches of the four District 3 leagues, which also agreed that if the meet is moved to a Wednesesday with a Thursday or Friday rain date, that the meet would remain at Hershey Parkview.

Coaches from the league will review the course in coming weeks to look at possible changes being considered by the PIAA. Those changes include moving the finish area to the fairway adjacent to the starting fairway, and looking at possible ways to alter the course to avoid areas prone to heavy flooding.
