MileSplit Best of 2008

It was an Olympic year. A historic year. Simply an amazing 365 days.

It was a year in which we not only saw the prep stars that we cover on a daily basis qualify for the Olympic Trials, but one in which they announced their presence with authority.

It was a year in which we witnessed five new national standards on the track; six more all-time No. 2 performances were also recorded.

Pictured right in photo by Margot Kelly, Elijah Greer (OR) winning the 800 meters in a stunning 1:47.68, U.S. #4 all-time

It was a year where several cross country teams and athletes competed for the moniker of best ever; not to mention a myriad of other truly mind-boggling performances.

As the year draws to a close, we will be counting down what we felt were the 10 best performances of 2008.

Today we relive the moment voted #8 by our staff and webmasters.

#8

May 31, 2008 - Jordan Hasay (CA) beats Laurynne Chetelat (CA) 9:52.13-9:52.51 3200m, U.S. #2 & #3 A-T

You run sub-10 minutes for 3200 meters, a huge PR. You eclipse the existing state meet record in the event. Your time is the third best ever run by a high school student at that distance ... and the effort is not even good enough for a state title. You have to settle for second place.

Welcome to life at the 2008 CIF Championships for Davis (CA) standout Laurynne Chetelat.

Chetelat ran stride for stride with prep distance wunderkind Jordan Hasay (Mission Prep, CA) nearly the entire race. Chetelat actually led through 800 meters (2:33) and a mile (5:03) before Hasay reclaimed the lead with a 73-second lap that dropped everyone except Chetelat. Not even their shadows separated them as they cruised through the final three laps.

With Hasay in a dead sprint that would eventually go down as a 67-second closing lap, Chetelat actually had the nerve to challenge the queen of California distance running, pulling up next to the reigning state champion. But it was Hasay, who would capture here third CIF 3200 title, using her impressive leg speed to hold off Chetelat at the line, 9:52.13-9:52.51.

The two times rank the young ladies U.S. #2 and U.S. #3 all time in the 3200m/two-mile race, following the performance of Kim Mortensen's (Thousand Oaks, CA) 9:48.59 (two-mile) set back in 1996. The efforts bettered Mortensen's state meet record of 9:52.80, set more than a decade earlier. It was the first time ever that two high school girls ran sub 10 in the same race.
