AA Girls' Pole Vault Preview
The one to beat in the AA girls' pole vault is Richland's Morgan Gossard. Sixth in AA a year ago, the senior's vaulting has seriously taken off this season. She took sixth at indoor states (12-00) and has been undefeated during the outdoor campaign. It culminated with a big PR of 13-00 to win the District 6 title. That's also made her just the sixth girl in PA state history to clear 13 feet or better. We'll see how high she can go this time around.
Loyalsock's Hailey Zurich will look to challenge Gossard. She was seventh at indoor states and has put together a strong spring season. She won the District 4 title with a clearance of 12-00, a PA#6. Expect the sophomore to be in the mix at Ship.
Western Wayne's Trina Barcarola (seventh last year) cleared 11-07.25 to win the District 2 title. Alexis Gerwert of Bellwood Antis jumped a big PR of 11-06 to win the ICC; she was fourth last year Moniteau's Kendall Grossman took second a year ago in AA and has cleared 11-04, so look for her to be in the mix.
Greensburg Central Catholic's Lauren Ritenour and Waynesburg Central's Taylor Shriver battled to a 1-2 finish, respectively, at the WPIAL Championships and both will be factors again this week. Corah Krantz of Lakeland was fifth last year and returns to the fray again this season, looking for another medal.
Now former state record holder Katie Jones has graduated, but the total level of competition sure is rising in girls' AA pole vault.
