AA Boys' 100m Preview
Dock Mennonite's Austin Kratz has waited his turn in the 100 meters. For the past three years, he took second to Bloomsburg's Jahvel Hemphill, who was in the process of winning four straight state titles in the event. Now that Kratz is a senior, he's become one of the top sprinters in PA state history. He had a stellar indoor season that has carried over into the spring. He's run 10.31 in the 100 meters and enters the weekend as one of the heaviest favorites to win state gold.
This is still a talented a deep field, though. William Gruber of Hickory dropped a big PR of 10.77 to win the District 10 title in a busy meet. He's riding some good momentum into the weekend. Aliquippa's Marlin Devonshire also dropped a big PR -- a 10.83 -- to win the WPIAL crown in the 100. He was a semifinalist in 2017, but is much-improved. this season.
District 3 champ Brendan Sparr of Schuylkill Valley has run 10.92 this season and should factor in. The same goes for Seneca's Anthony Popalardo, who has clocked a 10.93 this spring. Shady Side's Michael Tomlin, Motivation's Laminu Abbas, and Lehighton's Tahmir Spencer are among the many in this field that will have a good shot at the final and a medal.
