The Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy girls have turned into a PA powerhouse in the last few years. In 2015, Saint Joe's won the 1A state title (after taking second in District 6). In 2016, SJCA won the D6-A title and the the 1A state title again. Last year, the squad won the D6 title, but came up just a few points short of its third straight states win.
This season, SJCA will also be going for its third straight District 6 Class A crown and its third Class A state title in four years. With six of seven varsity runners back a return to the top of the podium in Hershey is certainly in the cards for the Wolves. But first will come a good test within District 6.
Back this year is Sera Mazza, who won the 1A individual state title in 2016, and Julia Cusatis, the D6-A champ last year. The pair were eighth and 12th respectively at states last season and make for a solid top two to lead the way. Addie Ebbs and Myah Chappell are also top five runners back this season. This is a team that knows when to peak, too.
But looking to challenge SJCA this season, as it did last year, is Marion Center Area. MCA was nine points off the district title last season and went on to take fourth at the state meet. The solid duo of MacKenzie Walker and Alyx Corentto are back, along with Micaylee DeHaven. Marion Center loses two seniors from last year's team, but could definitely compete for the district, and even the state title in 2018.
With two state qualifying spots in D6-A, it will be tough for any teams to take down the two favorites. The team with the best shot is Penns Valley Area, which returns to 1A after spending two seasons in 2A. PVA was third at at districts in 2A last season and brings back five girls from that team. Kelsey Hull was the team's lone state qualifier last season as a freshman. Along with rising senior Karly Smith, Penns Valley has a pair of strong top runners.
Westmont Hilltop, United, Penns Manor, and Bishop McCort could all compete for high finishes this season, as well, if they can add some good pieces.
