PTXC 10 Boys' Gold Race - Recap
The Loudoun Valley (VA) boys may not have gone 1 through 4 in the Gold Race, like it did last year, but the US#1 squad didn't disappoint and actually scored fewer points than it did in its dominating PTXC 9 performance.
The Vikings put four in the top seven and five in the top 12, leaving no doubt about which team would take the team title, despite being without usual top runner Sam Affolder (out taking the ACTs Saturday). Jacob Hunter kicked to the individual win in 15:44. Former Pennsylvania standout Carlos Shultz, who transferred to LV over the summer ran a terrific second half of his race to place second in 15:48.
LV's Kevin Carlson was fourth in 15:56 and teammates' Kellen Hasle (seventh) and Mateo Barreto (12th) also ran well. Loudoun Valley scored 25 points, two points better than a year ago to run away with the team title by 104 points.
Mendham (NJ) also had a big opening meet. Jack Stanley took third in 15:55 to lead Mendham, which placed second overall with 129 points. Calvert Hall College (MD) was third with 187 points. The top PA team was Parkland, paced by Riley Williamson's 15th place finish, taking fourth. Danbury from CT was fifth.
The top PA individual was Christian McComb of Boyertown, who ran to his second strong performance in as many weeks. The Northampton Invite champ bettered his season best time from that meet, going 15:58 for fifth. He was followed by Wallenpaupack's Tyler Wirth, who was sixth in 16:04.
