AA Girls' Shot Put Preview
Mallory Kauffman of Greenwood (US No. 6) has been on a roll this season in the shot put and she'll aim to close out her senior season with a state title in the event. She was second a year ago at states in AA, but this year, Kauffman has been close to unstoppable. Her only defeat came at the Penn Relays, where she was top American. Her season best of 47-10.25 came in a dual meet, and on five total occasions she topped the 47 foot mark. She'll be the favorite coming into Saturday's competition.
Maura Huwalt of South Park is likely the best bet to try to go for the upset. She was third last year at states, a few inches off Kauffman. Huwalt, too, is throwing the best of her career. She tossed a PR of 44-3 to win the WPIAL title and is in good form going into states.
Two others in the field have eclipsed 40 feet. United's Maizee Fry threw 41-00.5 to win the District 6 title. Her season best of 41-6 came at the Heritage Conference Champs, and she'll aim to improve upon her fifth place finish from last year. Then there's the freshman standout Emma Callahan of Shenango. She topped 40 feet for the first time outdoors to take second to Huwalt at WPIALs, with an overall PR of 41-5.25. She is the No. 9 ranked freshman in the country.
Lakeland's Mikayla Marino, Schuylkill Valley's Ashlyn Giles, Union Area's Madison Wynn, and Greenville's Carly Fattman are among the others that could land on the podium here.
