Workout Wednesday: Karrie Baloga of Cornwall HS

Late August, we caught up with Karrie Baloga, and the Cornwall Cross Country Team.  Baloga is the State's Top Returning Freshman, looking to make an impact on the 2019 Season.  Already, she has dominated freshman-only races, winning the 1.5 mile distances by over a minute over the competition.  The strategy is a concerted effort by the coaches to bring Baloga along slowly for a Season that could be special.  She'll get her first crack at the 5K distance this weekend, at the Paul Short Invitational.

The program is head up by Coach Dave Feuer, alongside longtime Assistant Coach Brian Creeden.  Together, they brought home Cornwall's first Team State Title in 2018 after placing second three times prior in their careers.  In 2019, their school, by nature of enrollment, was moved up to Class A and both coaches are ready to adapt to the challenge. Cornwall is also home to one of only four Foot Locker National Champions to hail from New York, of which both coaches were integral to the development of Aisling Cuffe back in 2010.

Karrie comes from a Track family, as her mother, Katie Baloga, contested the first Steeple race at the US Olympic Trials for Women in 2000.  Her father, Barry Baloga, was a longtime coach at North Rockland, before a partial retirement in which he coached Alex Harris (North Rockland) to become the fourth faster NY Steepler ever. Karrie herself set the 8th Grade State Record in the Steeple last spring, running 6:43.19 at 13-years-old. You can hear from Karrie after her most recent win at Bowdoin Park, below.
