Throwback: Quarzo Dominates Field At South Hills

Today, we're bringing you another throwback from last season: Gionna Quarzo's dominating performance in the 3,200 meters from the 2019 South Hills Classic.

Like every other early season meet, the South Hills Classic has been cancelled. The annual meet at Baldwin would have happened this weekend in Pittsburgh.

Quarzo, now a senior at Brownsville Area, opened up her outdoor season in a big way at South Hills, rolling to a wire-to-wire win in the 8-lapper. The NC State signee clocked a time of 10:29.29 -- a PR at the time -- and lapped almost the entire field en route to a big early-season win.

That set the stage for a big spring. Quarzo went on to win her second straight PIAA Class AA state title in the 3,200 meters. At Shippensburg in late May, the junior went 10:25.91 to defend her title by over 30 seconds. That also broke Carly Seymour's 2008 meet record, which had previously stood at 10:31.85.
