MANSFIELD, Pa. - Sophomore
Neely Spence averaged a five-minute mile on Saturday morning at the Mountaineer Flatland Invitational to win the 4K race with a time of 12:26.70 that was nearly two full minutes faster than the second-place effort of junior teammate
Abby Huber.
Meanwhile, redshirt junior
Mary Dell earned second place in the 6K race held on Saturday by posting a time of 21:30.90 that is a five-second improvement to her personal-best effort set last season at the Paul Short Run. Overall, Shippensburg finished second in the 4K race by totaling 39 points and third in the 6K race with a total of 81 points.
The Lady Raiders were only one of two PSAC schools (along with Bloomsburg) to divide their runners between the two distances of competition and a number of athletes stepped up with solid runs. Huber's performance was 10 seconds faster than the rest of the field, as the junior runner finished in 14:05.90. It was a 90-second improvement from her effort on the home course two weeks ago and is 40 seconds than her 4K personal-best that was established last season.
As for Spence, she completed the home 4K course at Shippensburg University last week in a new course-record of 13:56, but that effort was still a full 90 seconds slower than her performance on Saturday in Mansfield. Her previous 4K personal-best at Shippensburg was a time of 13:33 set last year at the Dickinson Invitational.
In the 4K race, the No. 3 through No. 6 runners all finished as a pack at places 11-14. Leading that group was freshman
Alyssa Morgan, who completed the course in 15:45.60. Sophomores
Stephanie Sleboda,
Courtney Moyer and
Maria Baldino all finished within eight seconds of one another.
Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore
Katie Frey posted a 10th-place finish in the 6K race after completing the course in 22:38.20. Junior
Emily Dubs continued a solid start to the season with a 6K time of 23:16.50 that earned her a Top 20 finish. Sophomore
Sarah Strayer and junior
Chelsea Lacko were also scoring runners in the 6K for Shippensburg.
Shippensburg's next race will be an all-out competition against a multitude of Division I programs at the Brooks Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University. That event will be held on Friday, October 2.
