SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's cross country team maintained its outstanding pace by starting the 2009 season with another round of solid performances at the team's annual Alumni Meet, handily winning the friendly competition against several local institutions.

Sophomore Neely Spence led all runners with a time of 13:56 that lowered the 4K course record by 21 seconds. Redshirt junior Mary Dell took second place with a time of 14:50 while redshirt sophomore Katie Frey finished fourth in 15:19.

The top-five runners for Shippensburg all finished seventh place or higher. Junior Abby Huber finished in sixth place with a time of 15:32, while junior Emily Dubs finished one spot behind in 15:35.

"The race of the day belonged to Emily Dubs," said head coach Steve Spence. "After a breakthrough track season in which she ran 2:16 for the 800, she is quickly gaining confidence as a cross country runner."

Sophomore Sarah Strayer finished in 13th place with a time of 15:52 and redshirt junior Lindsey Hollenshead took 14th place with a time of 16:04 while freshman Ashley Fornshell was the team's leading freshman finsher in 16:08 (16th place).

The cross country team returns to action in two weeks at the Mountaineer Flatland Invitational in Mansfield, a meet that serves as a preview of the course at which this year's Atlantic Regionals will be held.
