Meet History: Top 25 (.pdf)
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University men's cross country team performed extremely well in its season-opening race at the team's annual 6K Alumni Meet by placing four runners among the Top 5 to stave off No. 9 Dickinson (Division III) and win the friendly competition against several local institutions.
Shippensburg ran well overall but closed the race very effectively. According to head coach
Steve Spence, the race was very exciting as the Red Raiders were even with Dickinson through the halfway point.
Over the final 3K, the Red Raider lead pack of juniors
Bryan Beegle,
Sean Stetler,
Ethan Rissell and sophomore
Stephen Schelander joined Dickinson runner Greg Leak to distance themselves from the remainder of the field.
Beegle won the race in 19:04, the second-fastest time in meet history, while Stetler was third (19:10), Rissell was fourth (19:16) and Schelander fifth (19:21). Overall, the men placed eight runners in the Top 12, including freshman
Matt Gillette (9th; 19:44), junior
Jake Sitler (10th; 19:45), sophomore
Brandon Boyer (11th; 19:45) and junior
Jeremy Brady (12th; 19:54).
The cross country team returns to action in two weeks at the Mountaineer Flatland Invitational in Mansfield, a meet that serves as a preview of the course at which this year's Atlantic Regionals will be held.
