5 Years Ago: Wiltrout Breaks The Javelin National Record

Five years and one day ago, Madison Wiltrout made some track and field history.

Then a sophomore at Connellsville, Wiltrout launched the best javelin throw in high school history with a 185 foot, 8 inch toss at Norwin High School. On May 7, 2015, at the WPIAL AAA Central Section Qualifier Wiltrout uncorked the national record toss, which broke Haley Crouser's 2012 national record handily.

"It feels like you can't imagine!" Wiltrout told PennTrackXC back in 2015. "All the hard work and time seems to pay off when you see your name by that record."

That throw ended up as Wiltrout's best toss of her prep career and it's a national record that still remains to this day. The record mark saw its biggest threat last spring when another PA star, Mifflin County senior Skylar Ciccolini, came within a foot and a half of it at the Penn Relays with her high school best of 184-2. That mark stands at PA No. 2 and US No. 2 all-time.

Despite battling injuries throughout her high school career, Wiltrout still closed out her career with four PIAA Class AAA state championships in the javelin, a rare feat. She also won the national title in the event as a senior at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Greensboro, North Carolina. She's currently at the University of North Carolina.
