Korbin Martino decisively won Heat 3 of the 400 meter dash on Friday at the adidas Indoor Nationals in Virginia Beach, VA.

At stake was a spot in the final round, scheduled for Sunday at 12:10 pm. Sharing the track with just two other competitors and with the recipe of advancement being the top 8 fastest times from the eight contested heats, crossing the line first would not necessarily be enough. Martino had to run fast and the senior from Canal Winchester would end up doing just that.

MileSplit commentator Olivia Ekpone's race call of, "Martino... Out like a bullet," rang true. The Penn State signee got out of the gates in a hurry and kept his momentum all the way through the line, as he clocked 48.85 to win by north of one second. Freddie Haynesworth IV took second in 49.87 and Richard Edwards recorded a 49.99 mark for third place. Martino leaned on a particularly strong opening 200 to get the job done. He split 22.54 seconds through the half-way point.

Martino will enter the finals competition as the second ranked participant. Ashton Schwartzman, Bradenton, FL, led the way with a 48.62 effort in Heat 2.
