EDINBORO, Pa. - The Shippensburg University men's cross country team earned a third-place team finish at the 2009 PSAC Championships on Saturday morning from a mostly saturated course in Edinboro and finished the day as the only school to place six runners among the all-conference Top 20 finishers.
Shippensburg was also the only school to put all seven of its top runners in the Top 25, an excellent sign heading into next week's regional race from Mansfield. Lock Haven, however, placed four among the Top 8 to win the team title with 39 points while Ednboro placed five among the Top 15 to finish second with 53 points. SU totaled 73 points.
Leading the way for the Raiders was true freshman
Matt Gillette, who placed ninth overall with a time of 26:51. Freshman
Ed Buck was one spot and one second behind Gillette for 10th place, as the duo continued to build off their strong runs at Gettysburg just two weeks ago.
A pack of four SU runners finished consecutively from 17th to 20th place. Leading this group was sophomore
Stephen Schelander, who clocked in with a time of 27:04. Continuing the quartet was junior
Sean Stetler [27:10], junior
Ethan Rissell [27:11] and redshirt junior
Josh Neyhart [27:15].
Freshman
John Reilly also continued his emergence with a 25th-place finish and a time of 27:32. Rounding out the 10-person field for Shippensburg was sophomore
Eric Evans [27th place; 27:37], redshirt sophomore
Brandon Boyer [28th place; 27:39] and junior
Jake Sitler [68th place; 29:10]. Sitler ran while battling an injury as SU also laid claim to finishing nine runners among the Top 30.
Junior
Bryan Beegle did not compete but will be in action with the rest of the Red Raiders next Saturday as the NCAA Atlantic Regionals will be held from Mansfield University.
