Meet Preview: District 6 Championships

District 6 Class A Girls - Race Preview

  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 2
  • State Qualifying Spots For Individuals: 10

Individuals To Watch: Alex Chobany (Portage Area); Alexis Durn (Penns Valley); Amber Fisher (SJCA); Morgan Hess (Juniata Valley); Lydia Miller (Marion Center); Reagan Ryen (Marion Center); Lilly Ryer (Marion Center); Lauren Shaffer (Portage Area); Anna Stitzer (Penns Valley); Clara Wallace (Ligonier Valley)

Contending Teams: Juniata ValleyMarion Center Area; Ligonier Valley; Portage Area; Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy

The Skinny: Shaffer will be going for her third straight district title, but she will have company up front. Stitzer was just a place behind Shaffer at Foundation earlier this season, and we should expect to see those two battling it out front. Both will have at the state title in Class A this season, so this will be a good preview of that action. Hess, Miller, and Ryen will be in the mix for tip five finishes.

The team race, as always, should be interesting. Marion Center was second at Foundation and won the Heritage Conference. MCA looks to be the team to beat here before it goes after a possible state title a week later. After that, a few teams will be battling it out for the second of two state qualifying spots. Portage was second in the Heritage Conference and has a solid top two with Shaffer and Chobany. Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy is always a team to watch for and the Wolves will certainly make a play for a state spot. Portage was fifth at Foundation, just seven points ahead of SJCA. Ligonier Valley and Juniata Valley will look to have good days to make a run at the top two.

District 6 Class AA Girls - Race Preview

  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 1
  • State Qualifying Spots For Individuals: 5

Individuals To Watch: Morgan Brandis (Central Cambria); Julia Dill (Westmont Hilltop); Delaney Dumm (Forest Hills); Stella Kuntz (Central Cambria); Annaliese Niebauer (Central Cambria); Abigail Sheehan (Central Cambria); Alaina Sheehan (Central Cambria)

Contending Teams: Central Cambria; Forest Hills; Westmont Hilltop

The Skinny: Central Cambria goes for its fourth straight district title on Saturday, and the Red Devils, whose goals probably include a state championship, will be the big favorites to grab the lone state spot in D6-AA. CC cruised to the LHAC title last week, and appears to be in a good spot to secure that top spot in the district with Forest Hills looking to keep it close.

Individually, Dumm comes in as the one to beat, having claimed trademark wins at Big Valley, Altoona, and then last week's LHAC Champs. At LHAC, she held off a strong contingent of challengers and she'll be looking to do the same on Saturday. Niebauer and Dill have the best shot to knock off Dumm and it could be close for the district title.

District 6 Class AAA Girls - Race Preview

  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 1
  • State Qualifying Spots For Individuals: 5

Individuals To Watch: Kylee Cubbison (Mifflin County); Amy Devan (State College); Natalie Koncoski (State College); Marlee Kwasnica (State College); Grace Morningstar (State College); Chloe Poindexter (State College); Reese Wilber (Altoona)

Contending Teams: Altoona Area; Mifflin CountyState College Area; Williamsport Area

The Skinny: Death, taxes, and State College girls winning the District 6 title. That may not be exactly how the phrase goes, but regardless, it seems that every year the SC girls are the big favorites to win the district, and this year appears no different. The Little Lions should be able to win D6-AAA and advance on through to the state meet, where they will be a threat for another high finish.

On the individual side, Kwasnica will look to reclaim the crown. She has been SC's top girl for much of this season and most recently took fifth at Mid-Penns. Her best challenge will come from Mifflin County's Cubbison, who was seventh at Mid-Penns, 30 seconds back of Kwasnica. Not much has separated SC's next few varsity girls, who will be racing it out for spots inside the top five on Saturday.
