Girls Shot Put Preview
Emma Callahan of Shenango has been throwing at a high level in Pennsylvania since her freshman year. Now the senior and University of Iowa signee will look to capture her first career state title on Sunday in the shot put.
Callahan joined the 50-foot club this winter, becoming the fourth PA girl all-time to do so indoors. Her best of 50-0.75 came at Youngstown State in early February. At the time that was a US No. 1 mark. She now sits at US No. 2, trailing only Tennessee's Mensi Stiff, who put down a 51-10.75 to win a state title a few weeks ago.
Callahan comes in as a the big favorite. Her season best is three and a half feet better than the next closest competitor for Sunday. Callahan is in a good spot to secure that coveted state crown. Keep an eye on Maria Deaviz' meet record from 2020 of 50 feet even, too.
There are three other 40-footers in this field. Hempfield Area's Elizabeth Tapper comes in at PA No. 2. The versatile Tapper is interestingly also entered in the pole vault, where she is a medal threat, as well. Her best this winter is 46-6.75.
Strath Haven's Alexa Brown has been doing a lot of winning this season, grabbing six victories along the way. She put down her season best of 41-2.75 to win the DVGTCA Meet of Champions this past week. Governor Mifflin's Annika Ermold tossed a best of 41-2 this season. She's been consistent this season and should also be right in the mix for a high finish.
