9/4-Monks leads start to finish. Pates wins a close one at 30th Cliff Robbins Memorial Inv.

Hazleton junior Maria Monks went 18:55 to lead from start to finish as the defending D2 3A champ put 4 in the top 13. Dallas - the defending 2A state champ - was very strong taking places 5-6-7-8-17. Erin Matyus of Liberty was 2nd three seconds behind Monks. Wyoming Valley West also put 5 in the top 25 and Bethlehem Liberty had 4. In the boys race, Liberty senior Chris Pates won a great fight to the finish over Lakeland sophomore Mark Bucklaw and Scranton Prep junior Doug Gibbons. Liberty dominated by taking 1-4-9-22-24. Scranton Prep (winners of the last 5 D2 2A titles and a three time state champ) took 3-6-7 but lacked depth. Pates, a senior, was clocked in 16:12.
