PIAA Preview: Girls' Jumps

AAA High Jump

Sydney Jones (Haverford Township) has a slight edge over a tight field in the high jump.

Jones is the current state leader with a season-best height of 5'-6". She also won the District 1 championship, clearing 5'-5".

Grace Howard (South Fayette) also cleared 5'-5" to win a District 7 title. She's putting things together at the right time this season.

It will be fun to see Ella Bahn (Spring Grove), Eliann Schneider (Cedar Crest), and Madison Knier (Manheim Central) face off again. All three girls cleared 5'-4" in a close District 3 high jump competition. Notably, Bahn and Schneider are both only freshmen.

AAA Pole Vault

Like 2A, get ready for the 3A girl pole vaulters to steal the show.

Katie Urbine (Solanco) was last year's runner-up, but she's this year's favorite. Urbine

She launched her way to PA No.1 and the top seed coming into the state meet after an incredible performance at the District 3 Championship. Urbine set a new district record vaulting 13'-8". She also won this year's indoor state championship. It will be difficult for anyone to stop her momentum.

You should expect to see Veronica Vacca (Mount Saint Joseph) put up a fight. Vacca is the returning state champion, 2023 indoor runner-up, and notably won the Penn Relays this year. Vacca's outdoor season best is 13'-0", but that's not even close to her true potential. She vaulted well over 13' on multiple occasions last season and indoors.

Kristin Hoffman (Kennett) is also in contention for gold. The senior hit a PR and season-best mark of 13'-1" to win the Ches-Mont Championship and finished 2nd at the District 1 championship.

Hannah Shaw (Norwin) and Maddy Kelly (Villa Maria) are also top competitors.

AAA Long Jump

It should be a big year for the 3A long jump, with five girls jumping over 19'.

Summer Mellow (Methacton) is the top seed after she jumped 19'-5.5" to win a District 1 title. If she can carry that success into the state meet, she's a sure pick to win.

However, Jaylen Williams (West Chester Rustin) will be looking to even the score after losing to Mellow at the District 1 championship. Williams was 2nd with a solid PR of 19'-4.75". It will be interesting to see both girls push one another this weekend.

Karolyn Brito (Hazelton Area) is in the mix after jumping 19'-2" to win the District 2 title by over half a foot. In a competitive atmosphere, expect to see Brito pushing the limit.

Don't leave out Madeline Lewis (North Penn). Lewis, the 3rd place finisher in District 1, has an impressive season best of 19'-2.25". She'll undoubtedly put up a fight.

AAA Triple Jump

Will Ava Alexander (West Chester Rustin) win another triple jump state title?

Alexander is this year's favorite thanks to her 41'-10" effort to win the District 1 championship. She may not have competed in the triple jump at last year's state meet, but she notably is the state champion in this event from 2021. It will certainly take a big jump for Alexander to win.

Rose Kuchera (Canon-McMillan) will be one of the athletes knocking on Alexander's door. Kuchera won a District 7 title with a 40'-0" jump. Although her season best is an impressive 40'-9". That's still over a foot behind Alexander's best, but Kuchera is in contention.

Megan Baggetta (Butler) and Shaniya Weidler (Susquehanna) are both individuals to keep an eye on.
