Harpp, Deighton named to PSAC Fall Top 10

Slippery Rock landed two athletes on the PSAC Fall Top 10 as Jen Harpp and Jeremy Deighton were honored Thursday in an announcement by the conference office

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University seniors Jen Harpp and Jeremy Deighton have been named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Fall Top 10 in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and in athletics this fall.

The PSAC Top 10 is awarded to five males and five females after the fall, winter and spring seasons. To be a candidate for the PSAC Top 10 Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials for their respective team. The award is voted on by the conference's sports information directors.

Harpp, a senior physical therapy major from Highland Heights, Ohio, capped her collegiate cross country career this fall when she earned All-America honors with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships, marking the highest finish by a Slippery Rock female runner in the program's history. She also earned All-PSAC and All-Region honors with fourth-place finishes in each of those championship meets.

Harpp won the IUP Invitational and broke the course record in the process. Her lowest finish in any meet all season was the 11th-place showing at the National Championships. This is her second PSAC Top 10 honor, having been named to the winter Top 10 last year after placing second in the 5,000-meter run at the Indoor National Championships.

Deighton, a senior marketing major from Broadview Heights, Ohio, earns his first PSAC Top 10 honor on the heels of one of the most accomplished seasons in Slippery Rock men's soccer history. Deighton led the PSAC and the Atlantic Region in scoring, netting 21 goals and adding seven assists for 49 points. He also led the league and the region in game-winning goals with nine and hat tricks with two, including one in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Deighton was named to first team All-America honors, along with first team All-Region and All-PSAC honors as well. He repeated as the PSAC-West Player of the Year and was then named the Atlantic Region Player of the Year. Academically, Deighton was named to first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors and third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades. He was also named to first team Scholar All-America honors by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Slippery Rock was one of three schools in the PSAC to have multiple selections on the PSAC Fall Top 10, joining Edinboro and East Stroudsburg with two each. Deighton was the only men's soccer player named to the Top 10, as he was joined by three football players and one cross country runner. Harpp was joined by one other cross country runner and three soccer players.

At the end of the academic year, all Top 10 Award winners from the entire academic year are eligible for the PSAC Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, given to one male and one female candidate at the end of the academic year. Slippery Rock female athletes have received the award in each of the last two seasons, with Jen Hansen (2007-08 track and field) and Jen Blasko (2008-09 volleyball) each being honored.
