INDIANA, Pa. -- Junior forward
Maron Brown recorded his 14th "double-double" of the season Saturday night to lead the losing effort in Slippery Rock University's season-ending 99-71 loss at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Indiana.
Brown finished the game with a career-high 29 points, including 19 of The Rock's first 26 points in the second half, and had a team-high 12 rebounds, while senior guard
Maurice Douglas added 15 points.
Brown's "double-double" total this winter fell one shy of the school record set last winter by PSAC-West "Player of the Year" award winner
Denell Stephens.
Saturday's loss was SRU's 12th in the last 17 games this winter after a school-record 10-0 start and gave the Green and White a final record of 15-12 overall and 4-10 in PSAC-West action.
Indiana, the No. 6 team in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II national poll and the PSAC-West champion, improved its season record to 25-2 overall and 13-1 in division play. Saturday's win gave the Crimson Hawks a perfect 14-0 record in home games this winter.
The Rock trailed by only one point, 10-9, before Indiana went on a 27-8 run midway through the first half of action to take firm control of the game.
That run gave the Crimson Hawks a 37-17 lead with six minutes left in the first half. SRU scored the next eight points to trim the margin to 12 points, 37-25, but never got any closer.
Indiana held a 50-33 lead at halftime and held at least a 16-point advantage throughout the final 20 minutes of action. The hosts' largest lead of the night was a 32-point, 98-66 difference in the final minutes.
The Rock shot 35% (23-65) from the field, 31% (8-31) from 3-point range and 61% (17-28) from the foul line in the game, while Indiana made 55% (36-565) of its field goal attempts, shot 53% (10-19) from 3-point range and hit on 68% (17-25) of its free throws.
The hosts had a 42-38 rebounding advantage and committed less turnovers, 18-12.
Notes: Saturday's game marked the third straight contest in which Brown recorded a "double-double." He averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds in those games and finished the season with team-high averages of 16.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game ...
