Rock finishes season with 83-44 loss at Indiana

The Rock finished the season with a 6-21 overall record and a 3-11 record in the PSAC-West.

INDIANA, PA.—The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team finished their 2009-10 campaign with a 83-44 loss at Indiana (Pa.) Saturday night. The Rock finished the season with a 6-21 overall record and a 3-11 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division.
 
Indiana (17-9 overall, 10-4 PSAC-W) has secured the third seed in the PSAC playoffs and will face California as the number two seed in the first round, which will be played at California on Tuesday. 

Each team went back and forth in scoring through the first four minutes when IUP took control. Bethany Caudill tied the game, 16-16 with 11:43 left after hitting a three-pointer from Chere' Marshall. It was the last tie in the game. 

The Crimson Hawks went on a 7-2 run to finish the first half with a 31-18 lead. The Rock shot 21% in the first half, but out rebounded IUP 25-19. 

The lead was pushed to 24 when Erwn Withers converted a three-pointer off of a Amanda Mikatavage turnover with 13:39 left in the game, and a 46-24 lead. 

The lead was pushed to 41 with a minute and a half left in the game when Vianca Tejada nailed a three-pointer to give the Crimson Hawks the 81-40 lead, to eventually end the game with the 83-44 win.

Julie Molloy led SRU with eight points and seven rebounds. Nikki Presto and Caudill finished with seven points and Emilee Vitez and Mikatavage both recorded seven rebounds. 

The Rock narrowly won the rebounding battle 41-40, but shot only 28.6% (16-56) from the floor. 

IUP had four players in double-figures including Withers' 21 points, three steals and seven rebounds. Lacey Claar scored 12 and seven rebounds and Kierstin Filla dished out nine assists. 

The Crimson Hawks shot 43.9% (29-66) from the floor and 84.6% (11-13) from the free throw line. 

Tonight's game was the final game in the careers of Molloy, Presto, Marshall and Sandra Busser. Molloy finished the season the team's leading scorer (12.2 per game) and Presto finished as the leading rebounder (4.7 per game) and led the team in assists (3.6 per game).
