EDINBORO, Pa. --
Phil Rector picked up an individual title to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track and field team to a sixth-place finish at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference indoor championships Sunday at Edinboro.
Lock Haven won the team title in thrilling fashion, winning the final relay event to post a score of 135 points to East Stroudsburg's 134.5 points. Shippensburg placed third with 114 points, followed by Indiana (83.5), West Chester (52) and Slippery Rock (49).
Rector picked up the lone individual event title for SRU, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.25.
He was joined by
Kevin Jewel and
Jason Jamieson in scoring points in the event. Jewel placed fourth in 1:56.51, followed by Jamieson in eighth in 1:57.33. On Saturday night, the three 800m standouts were joined by
Dan Henry to win the 4x800-meter relay with a new SRU record, giving Rector two titles this weekend.
Brady Wert capped the most outstanding meet of his career with a second-place finish in the heptathlon, finishing the seven-event competition with a school-record score of 5,016 points. That mark, along with those of the top-four finishers in the competition, is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Kris Stalma scored points with a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.45 seconds to round of the SRU scorers on the final day of competition.
Slippery Rock's athletes with NCAA provisional qualifying performances will find out next week if they have been accepted into the Division II National Championships, which will take place in two weeks.
The Rock will open its outdoor season in two weeks at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina.
