Brown, Bailey earn All-PSAC-West honors

Rock junior forward Maron Brown was named to first-team honors in voting by the division's head coaches, while junior guard Jabril Bailey garnered second-team status

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University standouts Maron Brown (#30) and Jabril Bailey (#40) were named Wednesday as All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division performers in voting by the division's head coaches.

Brown, The Rock's leading scorer and rebounder this winter, was one of six players named to first-team All-PSAC-West status, while Bailey, the No. 2 scorer and rebounder on the Green and White squad, earned a spot on the six-man second-team all-conference list.

Brown led the PSAC in rebounding and ranked 13th nationally with a 10.3 per game average. He ranked eighth in the conference in scoring at 16.0 points per game, 11th in free throw shooting at 75.9% and 15th in 3-point shooting at 36.5%.

A native of Salisbury Md., and graduate of Wicomico High School, Brown had a team-high 14 "double-double" games this winter, one shy of the school record set last winter by 2009 PSAC-West "Player of the Yeaer" Denell Stephens.

Brown, who transferred to SRU from Cecil (Md.) College prior to the 2008-09 season, scored a career-high 29 points in the season finale Feb. 27 at PSAC champion Indiana and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds Jan. 10 at West Chester. He scored 20 or more points in nine games and had 10 or more rebounds in 16 of the 26 games in which he played.

Bailey, who transferred to The Rock from Division I Campbell University prior to the 2009-10 season, was the No. 12 rebounder in the conference this winter with a 7.4 per game average, ranked 16th in scoring at 14.6 points per game and was sixth in free throw shooting at 77.9%.

A native of New Castle, Dela., and graduate of Delcastle High School, Bailey scored a career-high 31 points Jan. 13 in a win over Mercyhurst and grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds Dec. 4, 2009 against the District of Columbia. He scored 20 or more points in seven games and grabbed 10 or more rebounds in eight of the 27 games in which he played.

Brown and Bailey led The Rock to a 15-12 overall record this winter, 4-10 in PSAC-West competition, and are the only starters who will return for the 2010-11 season.

Brown has been part of a Rock resurgence engineered by second-year head coach Kevin Reynolds and has helped the Green and White win 36 games the past two winters, which ranks as the fourth best win total in school history.

Further evidence of the rebirth of Rock men's basketball is the fact that this year marked the second straight season in which The Rock has had two men's basketball players earn All-PSAC-West citations. A year ago, Stephens was a first-team selection while point guard Kyle Camper garnered second-team status.

Prior to 2008-09, The Rock had not had two all-conference performers in the same season since 2004-05, when Bill Johnson and Glenn Reepmeyer both earned second-team status, and had not had a first-team all-conference selection in back-to-back seasons since 1991, when all-time leading scorer Myron Brown earned his third straight No. 1 honor.

Indiana's Thomas Young and Joe Lombardi were named as this year's PSAC-West "Player of the Year" and "Coach of the Year," respectively, while Gannon's Tanner Furno earned the division's "Rookie of the Year" honor.

Joining Brown and Young as first-team All-PSAC-West selections were Lock Haven's Eric Brennan, Gannon's George Johnson, Edinboro's Byron Knight and Indiana's Darryl Webb.

All-PSAC-West second-team honors were afforded to Bailey, Jamar Harrison and Lloyd Harrison of Clarion, Indiana's Akida McLain, Mercyhurst's Heiden Ratner and California's Kelsey Williams.

The All-PSAC-East first-team was led by "Player of the Year" Stephen Dennis of Kutztown and included Cheyney's Sharif Bray, Mansfield's Yuseff Carr, West Chester's Ralph Hegamin, East Stroudsburg's Andy Heimbach and Kutztown's Ryan Washington.

Second-team All-PSAC-East honors were awarded to Bloomsburg's Ruben Britt, Mansfield's Ryan Callahan, Kutztown's Julius Gray, Robbie Pines of East Stroudsburg and Cheyney's Kevin Presbery and Tyrone Smith.

East Stroudsburg's Terrance King was selected as the PSAC-East "Rookie of the Year," while ESU head coach Jeff Wilson earned the division's "Coach of the Year" award.
