SPARTANBURG, S.C.
-- Amy Halls scored nine goals to lead the Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 15-9 win Thursday night over hosting Converse College.

Halls picked up where she left off last season, when she set the single-season scoring record at SRU with 57 goals. She tallied five goals in the first half and four more in the second half to match the total output of Converse.

The Rock also got three goals from Casey Quinn and one each from Emma VanDenburg, Katie Roof and Ariel Knox, who scored her first collegiate goal in the second half.

Alexis Slutsky picked up assists on two of Halls' goals, while VanDenburg was credited with one assist.

Ashley Winkelspecht recorded the win in goal, allowing nine goals and recording 18 saves.

Brianne Dishong and Olivia Lampenfeld led the defensive effort for SRU.

Converse (1-3) scored the first goal of the game in the third minute before Quinn notched the match at 1-1 in the fifth minute. Halls tallied back to back goals in the fifth minute and The Rock went on a run to close the half, scoring five goals in the final 3:18 to take a 9-5 lead into the break.

Halls scored the first three goals of the second half as The Rock pulled away to a 12-6 lead with 20 minutes to play, putting the game out of reach.

Halls' nine goals is a career-high and ties for the second-highest single-game total in SRU history.

The Rock will continue its southern trip with an 11 a.m. match at Erskine College Saturday. SRU returns home for its home opener against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday night at Thompson Stadium. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
